Hi guys, I'm after advise on checking live wires. Do I need a circuit tester or can I use the Electricians screwdriver I have, and if so how does it work. Many thanks

So m8 lots of very useful help from the guys on the forum .... It seems to be a fad at the moment ....ripping into folk and going off topic.

A lamp incorporates a bulb. The glass casing of the lamp is the bulb. The complete article is a lamp.

So apart from what you grow in the ground, when it comes to lighting a bulb is simply a bit of glass which will do nothing to illuminate anything on its own.

Ha ha ha, this topic has cracked me up!!!

I always say lamp... But then I can tell the way people look at me as soon as I've said it they think "don't you mean bulb"

So I say lamp... Then bulb straight after if I'm talking to laymen..

Ha ha, so that's my reply to the OP.

(get an approved voltage indicating device to GS38..(gives you a mark on your 2391))

they do, and they even give them away at stalls at the side of the electrical safety council ??

WTF??? So one of the governing bodies (or a drinking buddy of it) has the damn cheek to demand this that and all the other, off of the lads - but will allow the sale of an item that could be dangerous in the event of a major earth fault? Well that says it all mate.

I just brought the new Wera Kraftform VDE 7pc set, and this comes with a neon tester...

So if there that bad and crap why are top brand manufactures still providing them with there professional quality screwdriver sets??

I was supprised to see it in the box

You tell me mate? As far as I've always been taught neons are a big no no, but then again, I do commercial and the odd domestic.

They do some very similar ones for auto electrics.... 12V lamp in a 1 1/4 x 1/4 inch fuse type body, the familiar spring... and a metal end cap with 4mm socket to connect the flying lead.

Mix up one of those in your tool kit if you're used to those neon screwdrivers and it won't be the 12V lamp that lights up when you pick up the wrong one when "testing" domestic electrics!

What do we reckon? about 20 Ohms when cold for that lamp? OUCH!
