testing live wires

Hi guys, I'm after advise on checking live wires. Do I need a circuit tester or can I use the Electricians screwdriver I have, and if so how does it work. Many thanks

to get back to the question " testing live wires", no need for neons, volt sticks, or any other form of electrical test equipment. all you need is a couple of horses

He tried that first but couldn't get the horses up 5 flights of stairs to his flat.

If they're like like cows they'll go up the stairs but they won't go down them.
Still not sure about the theory that "dogs can't look up."

EXACTLY................................. I thought that Neon Screwdrivers were banned years ago!!! Do they even manufacture them anymore???

BIG Orange shed are doing them 2 for £1 ffs hundereds at our local I was tempted to layinto the "Electrical advisor" when I saw him direct someone to them FFS

They do some very similar ones for auto electrics.... 12V lamp in a 1 1/4 x 1/4 inch fuse type body, the familiar spring... and a metal end cap with 4mm socket to connect the flying lead.

Mix up one of those in your tool kit if you're used to those neon screwdrivers and it won't be the 12V lamp that lights up when you pick up the wrong one when "testing" domestic electrics!

What do we reckon? about 20 Ohms when cold for that lamp? OUCH!
