Engineer54, I sat back at the time because I was young and enjoying life what young people are meant to do, after grafting hard an putting a lot into my work I have done far from sit back my friend over the last few years, I have turnt down full time employment twice due to the stupid offers that where on the table for what they wanted and have stuck to my own values ever since , sat back is not a word I would use but a lack of support from evryone in the industry and just becoming yes men to worried to loose their jobs Is more along the lines. I have left companies I have had long runs if work with because I think they are taking with the rates that are on the table. Maybe I'm completely wrong and things will change in the future , but for now , I can't see that happening. If I could single handed get things changed for all the decent hard working sparks out there who can walk on to any job and do it at a good standard I would, unfortantly all my time is taken up working , doing paper work, pricing work that people want done for nothing , oh, and trying to have a life in the middle if all that

I am an electrician, and proud of it!
I am self employed and earn a good rate.
I am heading in to London to work Thursday and Friday and I am getting paid what I consider to be a good rate for doing so.
If people do not want to pay my rates then I do not work for them.

Yet I am not short of work, granted I work in other industries aswell, but I am busy 6 days a week.

I am a member of elecsa, but only until my current registration has run out
I did write to Clive Betts last year to complain about the current situation.
And then I did also write to the DCLG when they requested submissions to the committee.
I will be writing to ELECSA to protest the recent hike in registration charges.
I will be writing to the DCLG again for the same reason.
I will be writing to the charities commission to question how these scams can be registered as charities when they are clearly commercial enterprises.

What have you done about the situation? Come here and complain, maybe grumble about it in the pub?

Tanna, I have edit your post again over language....I`m a realistic guy who understands you are obviously going through some hard times, hence my edit an not a suspension...I really feel you need to market you business, and get out there, quick course guys cannot really effect you, because of their experience.

Bottom line is the average electrcian that works Monday to Friday , employed or self employed, that is any good, after tax, I feel is under payed, name me one benefit a employed electrician gets these days, A van with deisel card if you are lucky , that's it, if there's no work they can get rid of you just like that, no more double time for Sundays , time half if you are extremely lucky for any other over time. Some people ain't cut out for management jobs or starting up on their own, or becoming engineers running 5 million pound projects, not dueto electrical skill, but due to dealing with people and listening to the crap of all the big boys, Iv seen people end up ill die to pressure doing that type of work, what do you get at the end of it, nothing. I was apprentice to an electrican who won the Eca electrcian of the millenimum and have never come across a better spark, his 73 now and still has to work 3 days a week. That is a disgrace

I have come on here dave to complain to see the reaction I would get and guess what I ain't surprised. Thets get one thing straight , Iucky enougth am not going through hard times like a lot of other people I know, and I am grateful for that, on the other side I have got up of my arse, set up a company, get loans for van that I had nicked if my drive fully loaded with testers and power tools and I completely lost due to increasing rises in insurance, approached other componies of my own back that are all happy to have me work for them, been with the NICEIC twice , left after the first year because I thought they was a rip of and then realised that to get the work as a sole contractor this is a must, therefor e JIB card being a complete waste of time if you want to go down that line of working as the sole or sub contractor, have just taken out another business loan for graphic design and marketing online, so sitting back and doing nothing is very far from the truth. I come on here to get a general reaction to how I feel the normal electrcian working for a company full time is getting ripped of and to express my feeling about the idiots running the trade now. Last year I got a red card on a big project In London for taken my googles of for two seconds because they was steamed up whilst I was installing high level ladder rack. The man that have me a red card was a labourer 2 years ago tipping rubbish out of wheelie bins. I'm sorry but if you think things are going I the right direction I have to disagree with you

I think this post will cause a lot of different opinions tazz , thets see what the general reaction is . Wether people agree with me or if they think the complete opposite

How did your van get nicked whilst full if tools? Do you not take steps to secure it?

Did you appeal against the guy who have you a red card? I don't know the system but I am assuming that a red card means you get kicked off of the site? If so is it for a certain time or permanent?
If I were you I would have challenged it and appealed as necessary. If I was to get thrown off a site for no good reason I'd be seeing the person responsible for it in court!

nowt wrong with a rant tazz, maybe the negative energy can be channelled in a more positive direction.

be warned though tanna, that once you get invited down to one of these industry committees to vent your spleen, they'll probably then attempt to co-opt you onto the committee, and then you'll actually have to put the leg work in to getting some changes made, little steps at a time (probably mostly just stopping things going too much further in the wrong direction to start with).

It's like turning round an oil tanker, but from my experience, I reckon that at least some of the schemes are tightening up a bit - eg NAPIT now insisting on 2394 on top of level 3 NVQ, and in renewables they're now insisting on NVQ level 3 as proof of basic competence before allowing a company to become MCS certified (which incidentally would have probably counted me out 5 years ago, but honestly I shouldn't have been able to be accredited by myself back then after just a few weeks electrical courses, as I quickly realised and almost immediately partnered up with a proper spark).

I`m all open to free speech, hence the tread is still running, but blaming others for the industry is not really a discussion, we have done this so many times..!!!

Don't know dave, fully locked with alarm and immobiliser woke up one morning and was gone , had to start up all again but this is getting away from the point.
In London on the big jobs a yellow and red card policy is in place for health and safety policy. Basically the man ha now got a bit of authority and thought it would make him look clever by making an example of me, I am now banned from this contractors sites across London and have a close friend on the company that tried fighting my corner. not being funny but taking em to court over it is a waste if time, would cost a fortune , and the fact I threw my pass at him and told him where to go didn't help my cause. I have been told by my freind I could I back and work for them but I have rejected as it generally feels as if its you are against them, not naming the company on here but there are known for being bullies. Got by with out them before and will continue to do so, but what chance have we got when these clowns are running the show, ur telling me working with a pair of glasss on steamed up at height doing ladder rack is safe. The man is incompetent

If you did not take the opportunity to fight it then you have supported it and allowed it to continue.
If they are bullies then stand up to them!
I'm sorry but I have no sympathy for you there.

I have stood up to the men in the office on occasions when those around me have been too scared to do anything other than toe the line, it never did me any harm, just earned me some respect from them in the office.

Things are on the up....as for quick course sparks, well their lake of experience soon shows.....the old saying, of one complaint can cost you 10 customers, is so true...I love going to jobs were guys have messed up, and putting it all right, get a real kick out of it.

Me too. Makes one look rather good too. In fact it has become more of an occurence.
