hi, i have just done my am2, which is the new version. i was never given a lot of information before hand so i will list done the equipment you have to install, this might help some people who dont know what to expect or never had any decent information given, like my self.

s plan heating system with solar sustainable energy element. basically a solar panel which controls a cylinder and has a sensor which is supposed to be on roof. 2 port valves, sensors for solar panels and boiler allready have pre wired flexes. the joint box is like a push in connector and u use feral crimps to terminate. all the information is the just follow the drawing. really quite easy.

3 phase motor - just supply in from board to pre wired dol starter and take the suplly out to the motor from starter in sy flex. so dont worry about control circuit because its allready there.

cat 5 - just one cat 5 from one out let and the other end goes to another outlet.

smoke alarm - fp from board to unswitched fuse spur then out on to tray ( use fp clips not cable ties) and to a carbon monoxide detector. thats it for that.

lighting - 2 way and intermediate with 1 light only in pvc/pvc.

ring - few sockets with one socket spuring of to another socket.

main bond to incoming gas and water.

6mm swa to a isolator which then feeds a 3 phase commando socket.

and thats it really.

they chuck in different size breakers in the box so that u have to think on which breaker to use, allthough u get give a db chart.

i hope this might help people who are about to take the new am2, so that you know what to expect.:)

Hi, I’m a little confused with the 3 compartment Trunkin. I’ve never wired anything using it before. Do I run the power and lighting in the middle compartment? Do I run the FP200 cable in the same compartment or do I use the top compartment?
Which compartments do I use to run different cables?

Is there room to run cables behind the Spur unit back box or is it flush with the trunkin?
Cheers Tony

Hi Tony,

I run all my cables in the middle compartment, except for the data cable...where there should be a special bridge for going over the different compartments. The SWA is 4-core 6mm tie wrapped on to a bit of tray, then goes into a isolator (which is pretty small) then i think 2.5mm singles into commando socket. But remember to read specification on sizes of cables as they want you to follow this at all times to show you understand how to follow the information they give you.

Hope this helps buddy

Thanks Alot Stu, much appreciated. Was there room to get cables behind the back boxes in the middle compartment of the trunking?
Are the bottom and the top compartments left empty?

Hi Tony

Yes there is enough room to take the cables through, and you take cat 5 cable through top and bottom compartments and use the bridge to link the two. Also remember to use FP clips on the cable tray and don't use tie wraps!

How do you do an IR test on the Motor circuit and the Smoke detector ciruit?

When your testing the Motor do you just leave the isolator closed and test from the motor control box or do you test from the D/B?

When your testing the smoke detector do you just test from the board but have the fused spur switched off as the spur has a LED in it anyway?

When you do an IR test on the motor and smoke detector you just disconnect them, they are in like push in connector blocks.

If spur has a neon you will have to disconnect it and test up the spur and then test up to the smoke detector!

Hi Stu,

When you did your IR test, on the Carbon Monoxide Circuit did you disconnect the fused Spur (put tales into a terminal block) so bypassing the Spur completely and doing the same at the Detector and test from the board?

Also when you installed the Motor circuit did you put an earth banjo on both end of the SY cable?

All your help is really appreciated

On the S Plan system what size are the cables?
How did you mark the cables at the Motor and the 16 A Socket, did you just use tape with L1 L2 L3 on?

Hi guys, I'm due to take my am2 in 2 weeks and just wondering about it which is natural due to it being an exam!, how did u find it? Do you get a lot of armoured to play with? What order would you reckon in doing the installation etc, any more tips and tricks are much appreciated!

Hi there,

recently new to this forum, mainly because I have my Am2 starting tomorrow morning!

Only thing I'm sort of worrying about is the heating system as I've never really done much heating before! Its probably already been mentioned elsewhere hundreds of times, but if there was any help you could give me it would be great, or even a wiring diagram...lol

thanks!

Hi there!

First of all, I was in a similiar position to yourself, and I found the new am2 an absolute gift!

Main focus on the installation aspect is wiring and basically using your head, no structures used, e.g trunking, conduit etc is all already installed and doesn't need to be altered.

All wiring diagrams are provided and are all very clear. Central heating/solar heating and hot water etc is basically dot-to-dot.

A lot of the focus is on the inspection and testing of the test rig. I found this very simple although I do this every hour of every day :) Have a read over an electrical installation certificate and familiarise yourself with terms and expected readings and results etc. you get roughly 3 hours for the testing and I think a day and a half roughly for the installation.

After that you have your fault finding on a fully completed test rig. 7 Faults if I remember rightly, and with an hour to find them and document them. Very rough guide there, but if you have any questions just shout as its fairly fresh in my head :)
