ive had this exact fault before when i first started my apprenticeship.

joiners had put a screw through our well marked cables, test between each socket after disconnecting both legs and find your fault, worst case you will end up having to leave out the faulty cable giving you two radials, not ideal but it will rectify the issue till you can pull in another cable to complete the ring

the best way to learn from a mistake is to have the ---- taken royally, then you will think twice before making the same error, nothing said has been a personal attack on the op, id expect the same if not worse from my colleagues.

We all make mistakes! When I fitted my kitchen last year, I drilled the cable for the counter lights when putting up a wall unit, so I tested the cable for IR and continuity....all was fine, so I thought I must have missed it by a whisker! When it came to grouting (at night) I had the counter lights on and was getting zaps whilst grouting and resting my other hand on the cooker, I had 107volts between the wall and the cooker! Once the wall cupboard was back off, I hacked at the plaster where the suspect damage was and the screw had knicked the live cable and made the capping live!

How did you overcome this mishap?

Once I exposed the damaged cable, I was able to pull some length on it and rejoined it with connectors, then once the wall unit was back on I made an access hole in the back of the unit and covered with a blank plate. Couldn't believe I'd hit the cable I can only plead insanity as I was in joiner mode!

being a joiner is just cutting sticks, i tend to zone out doing anything woodwork related aswell.

fault found. after splitting ring into 2, then splitting duff leg down, socket by socket, short was identified as being between 2 sockets. whether cable was snagged on installation or possibly damaged by other trades is unknown as it's now inaccessible due to boarding, plastering, etc. virtually a dead short ( 0.2 ohms N-E ).
took approx. 90 minutes to find. Simon has 2 options:

1. drill horizontally through cavity wall and have plasterer make good any damage ( sockets are only 4 ft. apart on either side of wall ) and reinstate ring that way, or.

2. Convert to 2 x 20A radials dependent on perceived load on circuit/s.

either way, a good experience of fault finding for Simon, followed by a couple of pints in a decent unspoilt local.

he has a 3rd option, remove cables at db and stuff behind the wall, forget about them.

personally id blame the joiner and get them to take out patches, it can come out of their pocket.

i pulled in a supply for underfloor heating, literally as i leave the room the plumber is drilling a hole within a few mm of my cable, obviously he goes through it, in a scandinavian wooden lego block type house.

You mean Tel might learn something?
was looking a rating this post but there ain't an option for " do one you yorkie tw4t". :). only joking. banter is banter. i give enough out, so i can take it.

Sorry. I tried to include one of those smiley faces to make sure you knew I was joking but couldn't figure out how on my phone. Still can't.
