Hi, has anyone noticed Joe public can buy twin & earth at Screwfix for nearly the same price a skilled part p approved experienced Sparky can at the merchants he been using for 20 years. Doesn't seem right to me.

Ive had some cable from the cheaper supplier mentioned in previous posts and the cable wouldn't strip from the insulation as it was stuck together. It's unbranded cable that I wouldn't use again. Screwfix/Electricfix use Prsymian branded cable which is decent to use.

i had some of the same stuff myself, was pulling my hair out as all ready in place!
couldn't remember where i bought it though it was one of two places the one i think it was is a thingy that goes in candles,am i right ?

Just tell the customer that you will only install x-brand cable, x-brand sockets, etc. Then tell them that they are welcome to supply it themselves but that there will be no warranty provided on those products, only your workmanship. Any callouts regarding a job done that is found not to be a fault in workmanship will result in a £99 callout fee.
Works for BT when you report a fault.

I think the point is that different customers get different prices - you might expect a sparky who goes into a wholesaler almost every day and spends a fortune on their account to get a better price than a DIYer who might spend half an hour in there asking them how to fit their new light/shower, then return it the next week because it wasn't quite what they wanted.

I spent 14 years in wholesaling apart from big big contractors buying pallets of cable at a time the price you get charged for cable depends on your personal relationship with the guy serving you on the counter or the manager, the likes of B+Q buy in such bulk they get better discounts because of quanitity this is why their prices are so low

whats `part p approved` got to do with `skilled`?.....now in many cases it will......but on the other hand.....lol....

Its all very well to discuss the price of 50 metres (or 100 metres) of 2.5 T&E but how many customers would actually do this? And for the few that actually do they've normally got no intention of using a competent person.

TLC sell by the metre and its currently £0.95 per metre plus VAT. I include 2.5mm T&E in my costs at £1.25 per metre, which I think is perfectly reasonable.

Mind you I don't break down my costs so the clients never know.

I think that's perfectly reasonable mate. It niggles me though when I speak to people who've had some plumbing work done and been charged like £40 for a £10 piece of plastic tubing, not that they know the price.

went to a customer the other week with a rangemaster type cooker. the main oven's thermal cut out had gone . customer told me they'd had it replaced a year ago by the manufacturer. £65 for the part, £70 call-out , all + VAT. it's a bog standard overload, £15 from my supplier.
