How can we put an end to this drivel? Why is there people out there unqualified and inexperienced bluffing their way into work. Taking work from fully qualified time served lads?Theres a couple in my area. Driving round in vans with schemes tatooed all over them. They look the biz - the outfit. But I know they are not electricians. They are chancers bluffing their way through. The 17th Edition minimum requirement to have a schemes backing...its a farce. The problem I have is the customers can't differenciate from a fully qualified. 17th edition, 2391, tech cert nvq3 electrician from a 17th edition short course idiot! It boils my blood

Maybe you could explain why my electrics are poor quality and untested?

Quote is out of context!

I may not have the 2330, but ALL work I do and will ever do is compliant with 17th edition and part P, and tested as necessary.

I have heard this claim a number of times and seen some "compliant" non compliant work

The term "electrician" does not only refer to people who work on industrial electrics.

You are correct it refers to somebody that is fully qualified with C&G 2330 or it's equivalents and not masquerade as one with some C&G certificates that most electricians consider additional to the core qualification. I stiil await a response to these other qualifications you suggest as an alternative to the 2330

You can use the term "pilot" to refer to someone who delivers mail in a Cessna as well as someone who flies a jumbo.

You can use the term "actor" for someone who's on stage at the local theatre as well as Brad Pitt...

Why does "electrician" only refer to the top dogs in the industrial game then?

Here we go again you are trying to justify the unjustifiable with another batch of bad examples:

Pilots all have the same basic core training and take additional qualifications as they move up the ladder I would suggest the cessna pilot would have little problem moving up unlike a DI into industry

What actors have got to do with anything is beyond me as none of them have to be qualified to act

"Electricians" are those people who have got the requisite qualifications to allow them to work in all areas of the industry I.E. domestic, commercial and industrial. As a domestic installer you are part of the deskilling of the industry supported by Part P and the previous governments desire to reduce the reported skills shortage. I don't think the training companies would get many takers with "become a domestic installer in 5 weeks" it doesn't have the kudos that "become an electrician in 5 weeks" has. You will have to accept you have been miss sold the qualification and are not an electrician

Or maybe I'm just bored with talking to people who are set in their ways and won't accept that times change

youd like to think that times are changing end of the day your a domestic installer NOT an electrician and nowhere near being one i think sparks are bored of you lot tbh like a broken record talking about being sparks when your not youve been let in the industry by a loophole to do domestic electrical work big whoop you do know that anyone can do electrical work in their own home following proper procedure lol you are just a glorified DIYer haha

Or actually understand what the term "QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN" means and the qualifications needed to attain it

I accept that times change and the industry has changed a lot in the last 35 years and still has a long way to go. With the rate of change of technology it has possibly become more complicated yet we allow these 5www courses to go on unchecked and then reward the attendees with membership of a Part P scheme on payment of some more money and tell them to go forth and be electricians

I have no doubt that the domestic installer course and qual could be followed with a domestic fault finder course with enough modules they could eventually become electricians

You seem to be making assumptions just as UNG did...

I have NOT been conned into anything, I have not done a 5 week course!

I think this was a justifiable assumption in the circumstances!!

Tell us, if you haven't gained your training via one of these 5/6/7/ week courses. ...How you have come to miss/skip on completing the presently recognised C&G 2330 Level 2 and 3 Core qualification???

As stated before here, no-one will recognise a person without that Core electrical qualification as being an electrician. That goes for employing companies and the likes of the JIB for grading purposes. The only people to generally skip these Core qualifications, are these so-called Domestic Installers, and generally these are the people that have only completed these Quick fix courses. These are little more than ''Wanna be Electricians" or instructed DIYers...

So what have you done?. You have made comments re qualifications and when challenged you have not responded, you argue the merits of a flawed scheme that allows those with limited quals and experience to present themselves as "electricians" and in some cases frighten customers into unnecessary work

To advise some one that the C&G 2330 is unnecessary to me is a bit reckless when you don't appear to be that qualified yourself. This appears to follow the trend and belief that being Part P registered is some sort of god status over the industrial guy's and that you are better qualified well dream on
