Was this standard practice back then? (1979).

A 30A rewirable fuse for two ring mains?

doubt it will be accurate on resistance. i have a fluke T5 -1000 and the resistance measurement is about as accurate as the royal navy's bombing of the Torrey Canyon.

Reading the news reports of the time, my parents got married that year, but I was yet a twinkle ... the RAF were no better! 62,000 lbs of bombs and Buccaneers doing round trips from RNAS Lossiemouth! Down home ... now I am closer to Lossiemouth than my first home was to Lands End.

That's the Secondary side.
Now ask him to look what the Primary side takes, most likely max 20amp.
i bet that 160 is a lot lower voltage on the secondry like you said

a quick google was showing 24v for mig welding.

always check the voltage motors in particular have differenet ratings for single or three phase

just for an example
thats under 4kw (24v 160amps) or 17amps for 4kw at 230v

do not use my example above, no transformer is 100% efficent so it would probably draw a bit more

Murdoch;

Apologies for the ignorance but what is the difference between split load C.Us and Hi-Integraty C.Us?

I have just been to screwfix online and a Hi-Integrity C.U. has two RCDs and also seems to be a split load C.U.

I must be missing something.

Sorry, but I believe there hasn't ever been any talk about Hi-Integrity C.U.s, unless off-course, I was on my face sleeping.

Many thanks.

Regards,
Albert
A split load RCD board would have 2 neutral bars, one for each RCD. Hi integrity boards have 3 neutral bars.

Not patronising at all mate.

I will be going round this weekend coming with my tutor's (fluke) multifunction tester.

He will show me how to use it as at college we only use/have megger.

Thank you for the input.

Regards,
Albert

These are kept in a separate tool case at home and only used in my electronics (laptop & computer repairs) really.

At college I was never allowed using my multimeter instead of my volt tester (fluke again).

This is unbelievable.

This lad is undertaking work he isn’t qualified to do and he’s getting assistance from established members.
His tutor if there is one should be giving guidance. Any tutor worth his salt would warn the lad off attempting this on his own.

It’s someone’s home, do they know the danger they’re in? Does he have insurance, I very much doubt it.

Tony;

Have you no trust in your fellow human beings?

Are you to say that any 38 year old (I admit my very limited experience) is a complete and utter lost case and thus incompetent to carry the job in hand?

Would you think I would be in a better position after finishing my level 3?

Swings and roundabouts. No one will employ me due to not having the so called CERTIFICATE and even then, the tune will turn to and I quote "No experience, no job! The certificate isn't worth the paper it's printed on.".

So I ask you, how would one get that experience?

I've know my tutors for the past 3 years and have complete trust in them. The owner of the house is more than happy for me to carry out the job.

On the plus side, at college, from the few already electricians on the course (Only there cause these poor old souls need a piece of paper saying they are qualified.) are saying that I worry too much.

Trust me. I do worry and I wish nothing to go wrong as this gentleman is very dear to my family. GOD forbid anything bad happen to him.

Again, I cannot thank you all enough, even though your comments (Tony & IPF) are detrimental to say the least, and please, I do get where you are coming from, for all the input, all the help and time taken to help the likes of us, like myself, who are less knowledgeable in the field.

Kind regards,
Albert

No I don't and this place hasn't improved my outlook.

Do you have insurance?

tony, an extract from a previous post by OP.:

This belongs to a very nice gentleman (I've known him for over 10 years now, who's kind enough to let me get this up to today's standards, under the supervision, of one of my too generous college tutors. He will then certify installation.

So whose insurance is this going on? Is the tutor insured? Is the OP insured? Will the tutor guarantee the work?

The home owner may be a very nice gentleman, that’ll change if he has to put a claim in and this can of worms is opened.
