Evening all,

For being on call out of hours what is the standard if any retainer fee, the place I work offer a higher rate when called out but what is a fair amount to ask for simply being on call? We can get called out at any hour and on the weekends

Cheers for any responses

It is certainly fair to ask for it, I wouldn't bother doing it if there was no fee. We receive a standby fee plus callout fee and higher rate for any calls attended, otherwise no one would do it
yh we get a pretty reasonable rate when called out but staying in on. a saturday night etc cant have a drink or go to far...just wondering what is a reasonable standby fee per day..good thing is they seem to be up for having one

I’m a sole electrician of an ERF and get called in on average once every 6 weeks or so. No stand by payment as such, obvs as they would pay me 52 weeks a year.
Gentleman’s agreement with the manager that if I get called in, I book 8 hours at time and a half regardless of how long I’m here. Handy when I’m only here half an hour resetting a starter 😂

When I worked for one of the big six, bank holiday stand by retainers were good money plus any call out were double time, which started soon as you got in the van till you returned home.

I'm in maintenance for a large international company.

I get paid a massive £50 a week, and £25 for 1-3 hours if called out 😂 The only benefit, is if I go home and get called out again, its another £25.

Luckily for me, I live just across the road, so don't have to drive to get there. Having spoken to some of our contractors, they don't fair a lot better, and cover large areas, so their call outs can be a lot longer with travel.

My son in law is a retained fireman. I forget the actual figures, but I remember being surprised at the considerable amount he is paid simply for being available, and equally surprised at how little extra he's paid when he's actually risking his life or scraping up body parts from a road.
