Just had an interesting "discussion" with a fellow spark. Job was/is to replace a single lighting pendant in a first floor bathroom (loft above) with five IPX5 downlighters. Cables clipped to top side of 50mm roof trusses. Board only has RCD covering three ring mains and no spare way on this side of the board. Switch drop is between two sheets of plasterboard with a two inch gap and is not being modified.

RCBO or not for the amended lighting circuit?????

Regards

SSorry I've just re-read the op.

Replacing one pendant for 5 down lights is a MWC and must be to 17th standards. As long as your new cables are beyond 50mm etc etc you don't need to supply rcd protection. yes you do. it's a bathroom. RCD required.

Sorry for any confusion before.

NOT!!!! there is no requirement to do so unless you put a switch wire in the wall but i guess its a pull switch thats there
!!!!! just re read post can you prove the switch wire is more than 50mm between plaster boards

Rcd/rcbo needed just because of the switch drop.

The switch is existing. Does the rest of the circuit come under the 50mm requirement. I would RCD it, but it is an interesting question.

IMHO this is a simple yes or no question to the RCBO.

Is the modification being undertaken in a bathroom? - Yes - then RCBO is mandatory IMHO

Tin hat on.

Pendant in a bathroom ? really.

Ouch! Your absolutely right...t'was a shrouded batten holder!

Interesting to see the various posts. I asked as I was beginning to doubt myself. My view was RCBO/RCD required as the circuit was being modified - length, load as others have said.

Other spark "no RCD/RCBO required". As others have said RCD/RCBO would be good practice in any event, but I wanted to check I was not misinterpreting the Regs. By the by, t'other spark didn't think a MWC was required either!

Regards.

not just to do with switch drop..... read 701.411.3.3

This is a good question. Are we asking if the regs say yes or no or are we asking if we would say yes or no?

In my first reply I said "if the customer will pay for it".

Imho an rcd in any bathroom should be installed but what do the regs say about changing a pendant to 5 IPx5 down lights with a switch wire less than 50mm from a finished surface in a bathroom outside of zones?

Interesting.

Rcd it if they will pay.

would you tell the judge " i didn't fit an RCD costing £20 on a job i charged £200 for because the customer wouldn't pay extra for it" ?

Good topic , makes you think hard about seemingly basic scenarios lol.
Best advice is to use your judgement and common sense for each installation and apply risk assessment realistically.
