Hi,

Got a job where I need to run cables round outside of building under 50mm of lime render, need to put it in capping.

Where can I get 3mm steel capping? Any ideas as im struggling to find it.

Whatyutalkingbout, why not just double or triple cap, a bundle of capping costs next to nothing just add as many bits as you want on top until it is as thick as you want it, or as thick as you even :devilish:

I did wonder that, but is that acceptable?

its that listed building thats just been bodged and all lime rendered and no access apart from going outside as thats not been rendered yet you see, ill take some photos when I go next, i am meant to be starting on monday.

It's funny you should say that. I found myself in the wholesalers in Cirencester a couple of days ago and ended up talking about how different regions do different things (after I had them scratching their heads when I asked for some Piranha nuts for SWA) - they said all you Gloucester boys use metal capping and the Ciren/Swindon ones use plastic. They said it was for mechanical protection, I said I had a Paslode that would prove them very wrong!

By using the right sized conduit for the job! You'll only need an L and N as the conduit will make a good CPC, if you can't get them two down 25mm steel you are definately doing it wrong!
seruously you can't get a 10mm through conduit?

why not save time and money and just cleat swa to wall (chased in)

Strange enough 10mm twin is 4.69 a m on tlc but swa is 3.24 (2 core)

Or 4.63 for 3 core.

Honestly use swa it will be cheaper and for an outside job it is better

For an apprentice, you're doing alright fella!

surely shanky aint an apprentice ?????
You certainly know your stuff mate
honestly ive picked up bits here and there by reading here a lot.

im learning a lot atm by asking the engineers at schneider how things work at every chance.

i get the gist of how things work but I wouldn't put my life on it, I would quite like to get more involved with the actual software side but thats impossible on current firm :(

you see we do install for schneider electric bms, so we install our own containment, power and controls to motors, valves etc amd occationally fire alarms

I'm not keen about using SWA in these kind of situations, it doesn't offer any better mechanical protection against penetration.
At least steel conduit will have some resistance to penetration.

Good on you shanky !!!!!

? if they hit something solid do you really think they will stop.

they will do what my stepdad did mounting pictures, get another drill bit and drill through it.

at least with swa it is earthed so it wont hurt them.

if you dont like it have you not thought about underground around edge of building?

Two words here: "Mission creep".

25mm conduit and singles should do the job just fine - the objective simply being the need to satisfy regs for mechanical protection for <50mm buried cable.

You have a valid point, it will be over 50mm in the wall if i chase it, but its not in a safe zone, thats my only concern, so nobody would know it was there once rendered.

I have never tried getting 10mm twin and earth in conduit...

I could use SWA, might be easier just put a dist circuit in and do it that way to a sub board maybe, ill discuss it with the customer if she is happy having a small board in the new extension.

There is a 10mm left on the back wall of the property ready to go into the extension but not happy using it as its crammed into a load of trunking underground from what I understand and not happy putting my name to it not being able to see it.

The lime in lime bond becomes inert within a short time. The problem will come with the fact lime bond is porous. The steel will rust, the rust will expand causing the render to spelch away. It will need a good coat of galvanising paint.

Look up “concrete cancer”

I would hazard a guess your electrician may be able to contact your DNO and have the switch swapped to a MFS very quickly..
