Hi,

Got a job where I need to run cables round outside of building under 50mm of lime render, need to put it in capping.

Where can I get 3mm steel capping? Any ideas as im struggling to find it.

? if they hit something solid do you really think they will stop.

they will do what my stepdad did mounting pictures, get another drill bit and drill through it.

at least with swa it is earthed so it wont hurt them.

if you dont like it have you not thought about underground around edge of building?

Depends how deep it's buried and how much sense the person on the end of the drill has.

I have had the callout before for an idiot drilling thru steel conduit, and it was in the zone vertically below a switch!

If the conduit is not too deep it will be possible to hear it rattle as the drill hits it and the plaster will crack and fall off along the line of the conduit.

You say that at least SWA is earthed, but steel conduit is earthed too.

not always, people do not always earth conduit so I would never assume it was to be safe.

its quite common that it stops and starts so it would have legs that are not bonded together etc

Then you might as well say people do not always earth SWA, you can't do anything about idiots.

I think it is safe to assume that uk sparks will earth any steel conduit he installs, he has never come across on here as being incompetant!

Without wishing to hijack the thread, how sure are you about needing 10mm for that cooker?

I'm not sure yet, but that's what was installed, it's probably 15m run, I understand it's an induction hob and large double oven cooker.

It really wouldn't surprise me if you can't get that down to 6mm after some calcs.

Why would you need joint boxes? You run steel conduit from the CU all the way to the cooker isolator, do the same for the first two sockets of the ring and whatever other circuits you need to run.

Oh and I have in the past pulled a 10mm twin through a 3mtr 25mm steel conduit with a 45deg bend in it. The rest of the run was about 50mtr through joists etc so twin was the best choice for that.

I would hazard a guess your electrician may be able to contact your DNO and have the switch swapped to a MFS very quickly..
