Hi chaps,

Just been to look at a hot tub not working and found a cap hat has fallen to pieces.

[ElectriciansForums.net] Where to buy components.

Trouble is, i have looked online at the usual places CPC & RS and the closest i can find is a 15uF.

Anyone suggest anywhere else i can try?

Ta.

Thanks.

I was thinking that, however, i think maybe the motor that it is attached to has had it?

Its not seized but it looks a little worse for wear.

I have just found a 16uF in a hot tub spares online shop so ill see what the client wants to do.

:)

The tolerance requirements of induction motor caps aren't that tight, as long as the new cap is 440V discharge voltage you should be able to use any value between 15-18uF. I'd just check the run current is within the max stated on the info plate to be safe. If we can't find the correct size cap we usually go up a little rather than down in size. From experience it tends to give slightly better performance/lower run current that way.

Also if the cap has gone bang or disintegrated it's often a symptom of something else wrong with the motor or the motor being overloaded/short cycled so it's a good idea to warn the customer it might be more costly than just a replacement cap.

Hi again chaps,

Thanks for all your help.

The customer decided to get a replacement cap rather than just replace the whole unit.

Installed the cap, powered up and it started to smoke considerably, although the motor does turn manually ok.

I think this is the third cap on the motor that has been replaced as the connections were, shall we say, substandard.

Anyway, his wife put her foot down and was told specifically that he was not allowed to spend any more money on it!!

:D

Absolutely correct they hold water, shrouds are totally unnecessary. 20s is 24mm spanner, 20 large is 30mm spanner.
