What chance have we got when we have to do things by the book.

Below is a link from last weeks Times , Check the comment from Keith Welton , He hits the nail on the head dosen't he!!!

Beware: the hidden toll of adventurous DIY - Times Online

Why pay for a qualified Electrician when when you can get people like Mr Welton to come round and put a few sockets in using a old bit of lawnmower cable and connector blocks he found in his shed and he will only charge quarter of the price!!!

No one really seems to care about Part P , The customers just want it cheap or they think you are ripping them off, And it seems loads of people will attempt work without any real fear of reprisal.

Keith's nail driven in one strike!

I think a big problem is the words 'COMPETENT PERSON'

People think they know about things and thus think they are competent.

How does the layman define the words Competent person and how does an electrician define those words they are two different worlds.

They buy some kit and on the packaging or on the back it says should be wired by a competent person.

rather than saying must be wired by a qualified and registered electrician

ok some instructions state NIC but its usually in smaller print.

then they either think I know how to do that or if not does my mate?

maybe not even thinking they must get an electrician.

Anyone agree?

I agree there is allways somebody they know who "can do electrics" if they get a bit stuck , Who cares about grommets and sleeving etc.
Selling consumer units in B&Q to anyone seems like asking for trouble but what do they care they are making a profit out of it.
I allways used to find that most of the white sheathed twin and earth cables I found were installed by Mr Diy.

registration cards with photo id would be good idea, retailers cannot sell to anyone who does not produce one, some plumbers merchants wont sell unless your gas safe so do the same.

The fact that you can not sell your house without all the correct paperwork for electrical work that has been carried out is a step in the right direction. If people know it is going to cost them later they might pay up to have it done correctly to start with.

Agree 100% - If you are not competent - then you are incompetent? How many DIYers would call themselves incompetent!!! Not too many i would think - so by default they think yes i can do that! As if it would be a slur on their manhood not to

As you say it would be totally unambiguous if it said something like qualified or registered electrician.

What i am not so happy about in the article is the constant advertising of niceic as if they are the only people who are electricians.
"i got your phone no out of yellow pages - are you a niceic electrician?" .....
