What chance have we got when we have to do things by the book.

Below is a link from last weeks Times , Check the comment from Keith Welton , He hits the nail on the head dosen't he!!!

Beware: the hidden toll of adventurous DIY - Times Online

Why pay for a qualified Electrician when when you can get people like Mr Welton to come round and put a few sockets in using a old bit of lawnmower cable and connector blocks he found in his shed and he will only charge quarter of the price!!!

No one really seems to care about Part P , The customers just want it cheap or they think you are ripping them off, And it seems loads of people will attempt work without any real fear of reprisal.

The only way to ensure that joe public doesnt carry out any electrical work in their homes is to deny them access to the materials which would allow them to carry out such works. There was a thread on here a while ago about this where one of the members couldnt even go and buy some cooking oil from a cash and carry without having some sort of trade card but then you have electrical wholesalers and diy chains selling everything you need to rewire a house. So the answer is to ban the public from buying, but who is going to that????

At my local car boot sale there are a couple of guys that sell just about everything electrical including dodgy looking CU's from the far east!! Any legislation will make NO difference to these sellers? Second hand stuff would also be available no matter how many laws that are passed.
In Australia it is ( or at least was years ago ) illegal to sell electrical fittings to the general public, but again, near to where I lived in Brisbane was a little flea market every Sunday where you could get almost anything...

Good for Phil and M lint shame on the other moron who has commented. I have never had to price much for myself really (as I am employed) but do people expect you to work all day for nothing!!!!

and now there is another clown adding to the original plonkers sentiments.

In the current climate why would you pay somebody hundreds of pounds to do jobs that are hardly particle physics like installing a fey extra plugs!
There is enough help and guidence on the web.

How predictable! How predictable that those pesky electricians - well known for agreeing with regulations - how predictable that they should agree they should be paid to do the potentially deadly job they've been trained for. Good God, there's so many forums out there, like the screwfix one for example, full of helpful young men who will give you sound guidance on how to stick all the red wires together and all the black wires in a similar matter. I can tell you with no doubt whatoever that any electrician will charge you in excess of five hundred pounds to put a new plug on an appliance.

i wonder what job he does? we may well be able to do his. it gets on my you know what when these idiots
be little the trade we have worked so hard and taken pride in our work. typical "it works what`s wrong with it " mentality we have all heard a thousand times before.

Well that has just made my mind up - when someone comes on here who is an obvious DIYer wanting advice on a job that a local spark could be doing i will direct them to yellow pages

Yep, I do that, don't give any advice to the public - they aren't trained, they havent gone to college, they haven't forked out for part p membership and most importantly they do not have calibrated test equipment, and without this how could they possibly know the little DIY bits they do are safe? Have had a few instances of fellas of a certain age who see my T shirt in the bank/supermarket/shed/carpark and start asking me questions about how they can do this that and the other. I always hand them a card and say I can't give them the advice but I'm more than happy to come and have a look at it. Half the time they start taking it really personally, calling me a rip off merchant and every name under the sun! Yea, OK old fella, I'll go to college and spend all this money just to tell you how to do it without paying me anything. Oh you know what you're doing? Oh really? Been doing it since before I was born, you say. Well then why are you even asking me in the first place?

Really winds me up, it does.

The dilemma we have on a forum like this is, on the one hand, giving out advise to trainees especially the new entrants and clipping the wings of chaps like that idiot mentioned

If we stopped helping with the first sign of ignorance, then we may be restricting assisstance to the new starters
By trying to exclude the Diy disaster morons who have no respect for electricity and its safe use, we may destroy the reason for the existance of forums like these,by unwittingly being unable to decide who is,or isn't the moron or the trainee when they register

Perhaps more of a selective membership or topic agenda may be an alternative
