What chance have we got when we have to do things by the book.

Below is a link from last weeks Times , Check the comment from Keith Welton , He hits the nail on the head dosen't he!!!

Beware: the hidden toll of adventurous DIY - Times Online

Why pay for a qualified Electrician when when you can get people like Mr Welton to come round and put a few sockets in using a old bit of lawnmower cable and connector blocks he found in his shed and he will only charge quarter of the price!!!

No one really seems to care about Part P , The customers just want it cheap or they think you are ripping them off, And it seems loads of people will attempt work without any real fear of reprisal.

its prysmian. Never had a problem with it. I bought 25 meters of 16mm earth the other day which wasn't on a drum which was annoying. Electricfix is good but I only use it for certain things and they dont always have stuff in stock. They were doing an MK rcbo for about ÂŁ28, other places were doing them for more like ÂŁ38. The free next day delivery if you spend over ÂŁ50 wins!

Why Bother?

I went to a job a couple of years ago to wire in a conservatory. Every socket and switch had been changed by the owner for a metal fronted one. He was allowed to do so and the work was not 'part P'. So what could possibly go wrong?

He didn't tighten any of the terminals enough, which would have shown up on a tester as either a high resistance or an incomplete rfc, but he didn't need to test did he?
The result was that every termination snapped off when they were removed reducing the length of wire available for reconnection and in many situations rendering the cable length unusable. I told him what the problem was and quoted him for repair.

Still waiting . . . . .

If I put in some extra plugs I can use a voltage checker so I know its safe.
And if the kettle boils I'd say it was working wouldn't you!
Charging idiots hundreds of pounds to change things that have been safe for more than 20 years....
No thanks , like I said you can find the answers on how to do things on the net with the minimal of fuss.

Thats the problem mate if they think it works then its got to be ok.
People don't want to pay out to repair things that are working at the moment.

i reckon mr crane needs to stick to his day job and stop whatever problem he has with paying a trades man the money he deserves, with his "low voltage checker" i wonder if thats his neon screwdriver, i wonder if he will be saying the same when he becomes part of the circuit. dam if i had have known we could test the integrity of a circuit with a 99p tool i would never spent hundreds on my meter. what a star the guy really is

I'd love to know how Mr Crane performs a continuity test, an insulation resistance test, an earth fault loop impedance test AND an RCD test with a 'voltage tester' (presumably a neon screwdriver, maybe a martindale plug tester at most). He can test theres voltage in whatever he's doing, which WITHOUT any of the other tests makes everything that much more dangerous, surely!? But please don't mention it to him: Maybe it's the booze talking but sometimes I just want to see the arrogant injure themselves!!

EDIT: Phil beat me to it.

i reckon mr crane is the only tool in the house, i just hope for the sake of anyone else that comes into contact with his handy work that they don`t get injured. i wonder if he feels the same about his gas and if he has a dabble with that one. of course there will be some sparks in the trade that will rip people off it`s the same in any trade, but the arrogant little man seems intent on tarring us all with the same brush.
