Why coil the earth?

Why do some sparks do about 5 coils before the bonding clamp, others don't!

Really can't see the reason for adding a few coils!

I've always thought it to allow a bit of slack for changes or alterations at a later date.?

Off the top of my head
It gives flexibility to the cable which may reduce strain on the joint
It allows for a new connection to made where corrosion or damage occurs
It looks the part compared to a rigid straight on connection

It allows movement for ease of decorating

Finally coiling the slack tends to calm the nerves of a spark who needs to fidget while arguing with the customer

well its the same as when you are drawing cable/s in to enclosures isn`t it.....you dont want those cables pulled tight do you.....leave some slack in em......enough so you can make em off again if the termination fails.....same here innit.........and as has been mentioned by Des......to allow for the wetman to correct his mistakes......

i cant do that mate, theres only so much cable you can leave!

In reality, i couldnt bend the cable tight enough lol

I saw a cu recently where all all the wires to the mcbs were in neat coils.

I think it stems from bonding all them tables in commercial kitchens as they used to move about for cleaning, about the only time sparks had a broom handle in his hand.

Looks funny, and provokes questions like this! I do it, the only downside i can see is EMF and wasting cable...

It should NOT be done. Look in to inductance loops under high current flow. OK it looks pretty but serves no useful purpose what so ever. Other than limit current flow, which you DON’T want.
