i was trying to install 2 switched fused conenection units on a ring circuit. at the start of the job i cut through a live wire which tripped the whole db. i connected the fcus ok. then put a socket plate on another one which had been wired ready. when i turned the board on the socket with the fcus has no power anymore this is the one which i origanlly cut through and the new socket has power but every time i test between earth it trips the whole board again... anoyone any ideas?

Have you got yourself a good 2 pole tester yet ? If not it would be a good idea to get 1, make sure it does continuity as well as voltage. You can do a lot of basic testing / fault finding with 1 without having to resort to your MFT, you don't have to pay a fortune for it.

Ive got a voltage indicator with continuity test on it in my tool kit that i got at collage (is that the same?) Its broke already as expected. Its just cheap tat so ill invest in a better on.What would you recommend? thanks for the info by the way its much appreciated.
They give us all sorts of junk at collage, one of which was a multimeter that wasn't even GS38,i think they got it from market or a car boot.I wouldn't of even checked a AA battery with it

Hi mate: I bought a Uni-T UT15c Voltstick about 4 years ago now & i've never had any problems with it. GS38 compliant & Cat 4 600v rated. Has built in Digital display & probe torch etc. I think at the moment they're about ÂŁ25 & well worth the money.

no one lives close enough to come round we will just have to see if we can find an electrician. its not urgent anyway we dont neeed it working now.funeral really mate its 230.yes i know its possible but bery very unlikely.

wallyyanker when i find the socket it comes from what would i need to do. just check there is continuity between them. if there is and thats ok then what to get it working. i know it hards to try and explain with out seeing it sorry.

Going back a bit: bury very likely

now im a 6 week wonder boy,i have a very long way to go i know already,i learnt the hard way on how rubbish these courses are after i signed my money away.Even so,if this kid claims to have a C&G2330 it actually makes me feel so much better. The comment that put things into perspective the most is the one you guys jumped on,and quite rightly so.I think i learnt about the dangers of electricity around the home in primary school,i mean come on,talk about a danger to yourself

I learned about the dangers of electricity at my Grandmother's home when I was about 3 years old.

She had a cylinder type vacuum cleaner with a detachable lead & it was possible to touch the live contacts inside the connector that plugged into the machine. I did so & got a belt off it.

I then presented the still live connector to my granny's neighbour who had popped in for a cuppa & told her to "stick yer lumb (thumb) in there" and she did ......................

3 core wouldn't, but 3 core and earth should I think. The live from the UH4 could feed both the brown and grey of the valve.
