Hi all need a little clarification.

Customer wants ceiling light fittings x 2 replaced with class 1 fittings. Lighting circuit is earthed at C.U. and class 1 wall switches, and at one of the lights. There appears to be no earth at the second light( just x2 black singles & no sign of the loop). Note both lights are in same room about 3meters apart but are switched seperatly. I have not been into the loft as of yet, there may well be a junction box_ containing the earth & loop. If so no problem.

If no earth is present I plan to extend the earth from the other light point ( same lighting circuit)

if I have understood the regs correctly the min size CPC will be 4mm with no mechanical protection or 2.5mm with mechanical protection. Would hate to try and terminate 4mm into a light.

Note only 3 meter straight run so conduit/trunking to provide mech protection.

if the singles are fed from jb above which contains loop and earth then i agree simple to replace with 1.5 t+e. But if not then 2.5mm earth (mech protected) from other light fitting would be acceptable way of earthing the class 2 fitting. Yes ?

just been scrubbing hands again. getting resin traces off fingers from yesterdays SWA jointing job. hate then joints. seen one at elex which is pre-filled gel, but lost the firm's contact details.

the question was about the size of CPC and mechancial protection required if a seperate earth needed to be run to the lighting point. i am well aware of the other options.
Yes if it is mechanically protected then fine, but if you installed a metal conduit between lights it would need to be connected as well wouldn't it? I think as it has the loft above it then just put some T&E between, any spark would do the same, it is easy and the best way. If there is existing containment in place and it tests out then yes add an earth between.

Pls note the two lights in the kitchen are switched independently,2 different switch wires from 2 seperate switch plates in different locations. i am unsure of the configuraton of unearthed light points wiring, as i have not yet been into the loft space above. All that is visible is 2 black unsheathed wires one maked Live one marked neutral. No Earth visable.

So as stated if there is a JB containg the Switched live Neutral and Loop for this lighting point in the loft space. then replacing the singles is simple with 1.5t+e

I really was just checking the cpc size for linking a seperate earthing conductor, if no local JB is present, and switch wire is wired directly to the switch plate. as customer wants not decoration damage.

Pls note the existing singles do not run between the lights.

Why Metal Conduit ?? surely PVC or YT2 trunking would provide satisfactory protection for the earthing conductor in a loft space.

A cpc rather than the Earthing conductor. PVC conduit or trunking is fine as long as it is continuous (which metallic would also need to be), which may not be achieveable without starting again.

here you go, mike.:

I find with these so called 'class 2' metal light fittings which are basically class 1 fittings with a crappy supposedly double insulated joint...

I completely agree. In real-world terms it will become less and less of an issue, as long as the lamp isn't broken exposing live parts.
