    Interview questions and tips

Hi pawel, I was an industrial installation electrician who went into being a maintenance engineer about 3 years ago, I am not sure what your job description is but I was a multi skilled engineer for a cardboard manufacturer and printer in Yeovil, expect lots of pump rebuilds, pneumatic...

No Neutral at 3 phase step down autotransformer?

Hi all, happy new year and apologies for the late reply, we have cracked the issue, it was sort of related to lack of neutral at the transformer although the voltage drops were also a symptom really. First of all, I connected a neutral to the supply side of the auto transformer (although...

No Neutral at 3 phase step down autotransformer?

Hi marconi, thanks for your reply, it's been a while since I've thought about it, but I don't think it would cause to many problems if I connected the supply Neutral to the auto transformer, as shown in part of the link you have posted, we would then have somewhere for the zero sequence current...

No Neutral at 3 phase step down autotransformer?

Hi all, Been a few years since i've posted but here goes! At the factory I work in we have an old Spanish line from the mid-eighties that is fed from uk 400v 3 phase via a 3ph step down autotransformer to give 380v output. The spanish panels Do not use a neutral, just 3 phases and further 380v...

Which is Best Dewalt, Bosch, Makita etc

I've got a 36V bosch, and it's brilliant, got it from CEF of all places, £300 all in with 3 batteries,

    MEM RCBO's

Which is a valid point DillB, I suppose we could go down the lines of leaving a notice inside the board etc. But we are talking domestic in this situation, I have only personally done it to fit 6A RCBO'S to lighting circuits and I would do it again. It's one of those modifications they...

    MEM RCBO's

And the very same manufacturer now supplies smaller busbar, and smaller terminals on their new MCB'S. Granted the makeup of the copper could be different etc. But if your connecting a 6A load to a slightly filed down busbar which was rated at 63A per way, I don't think using common sense you...

    High zs on RCD's.

I have had it before with MCB's, I replaced tthem as I thought it's obviously a high resistance connection, probably on the contacts, losing half an ohm is quite a lot.

    MEM RCBO's

Yes perfect sleep thanks, we're hardly talking a lot of filing, if you measure the bar, there much bigger then the modern equivalent, and if you were really picky you could calculate the csa of the remaining busbar lug and see if it was adequate for the load. Or replace the whole bar with a new...

    MEM RCBO's

Some call it a haircut lol On a serious note, cable haircuts are bad, but if you have a look at the size of the old memshield busbar, it's huge compared to all other makes, you could just buy a generic 100A busbar and it would be a hell of a lot smaller then the filed down original. I couldn't...

    MEM RCBO's

Gonna be contraversial here, but if you file down the busbar a bit, the memshield 3 fit fine. I have considered the adverse effects etc. Etc.

    electrical maintenance/ plc's etc.

PLC'S are quite simple really as far as on site maintenance goes, usually I just confirm that it is a plc issue and we get a local chap in go reprogram, normally it's a faulty relay output and he just modifies the program to use a spare output then change the wiring over, to be honest, most...

    electrical maintenance/ plc's etc.

Hi mate, I've recently just transferred myself and love it, if your a practical chap, you'll be fine, mist of my work is mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic as well as electrical though, even have to unblock bogs occasionally as well as changing lamps fitting doors etc.

Surely if it's just stated happening there could be a fairly easy to pinpoint problem?

viable replacement options for 8' fluorescents

That's the battens I always use, their cheap at £26 each and seem to last the distance, why anyone bothers with cheapo makes I don't know. The only fault with the thorns is that don't bother to secure the cables inside.

viable replacement options for 8' fluorescents

I hadn't factored in 103lm/w tubes! The ones that come with the fittings are 89lm/w. This would almost certainly sway me to recommend flurries as the light spread in this factory is a major concern of mine, all the trunking are spaced with flurries in mind

viable replacement options for 8' fluorescents

Currently 18 8' fittings on 20A bs88 fuses, wired in 4mm singles utilising trunking as earth. 4mm is due to length of run. Should be fine for 20+ LED fittings?

viable replacement options for 8' fluorescents

Very little natural light to be honest, and the whole place is busy so very little point in PIR'S either. Probably just stick with standard switching in this place but thanks for the suggestion

viable replacement options for 8' fluorescents

Cheers for replies, the LED tubes seem a viable option, I still like the T8 hf thorns though, I fitted 60 in the same place 7 years ago, 50% are still on the same tubes so way more then a 20000 hour life span and only had 1 ballast fail that I'm aware of, high bays and low bays are out of the...

viable replacement options for 8' fluorescents

Hi all, Been asked to quote for replacing 150 8' fluorescents on light line trunking, the fittings are on for 18 hours a day and access to many is difficult, many of the fittings are original 1967 cromptons still going strong! have been looking at replacement options, just wanted opinions of...
