    Insulation resistance confusion

So have you not done any further investigation, or confirmed your results? Even if the RCBO is not tripping low IR readings like these should be investigated further (assuming the results are as you stated).

    Insulation resistance confusion

The leakage from that value alone may not trip the RCD, but if there is leakage from things connected on the circuit then there may well be enough combined leakage to trip at the time of testing.

    convert 12v gu5.1 to mains gu10.

Not really, this is straight forward if you know what you are doing. My advice if you are unsure get an electrician in to do this. They can advise if there is anything unsuitable and if its just a straightforward swap out then it won't cost a lot for the peace of mind that its done safely.

Pricing for a rewire-high likelihood of asbestos

Yep, Unfortunately this could equate to nearly all "re-wires" in the UK. The use of ACM's (asbestos containing materials) was banned in the UK in 1999. The use of asbestos was especially rife in the 60's,70's & early 80's slowly declining in the mid 80's - 90's So this may mean that the vast...

I want a 16 amp socket in the garage with 3 double sockets

Absolutely, and I think it can work both ways. Some people find every possible way to reinterpret the regs to try and avoid something they don't want to particularly do for what ever reason. On the other hand, some people interpret the regs in a way that everything is black and white and that...

I want a 16 amp socket in the garage with 3 double sockets

Interestingly the definition of household is as follows : a house and its occupants regarded as a unit So if the socket outlet is in a workshop at the property separate to and not part of the "household" then does this reg apply? So would this fall under the "special purposes" definition?

I want a 16 amp socket in the garage with 3 double sockets

You can always try it first. If the planer starts and runs fine on a standard 13amp plug top then you are not losing protection. Be sure to make sure the RCD protection for this circuit is working properly. Very easy to catch and damage a flexi lead with a power tool like this. Though if you...

Best way of fixing boxes to crumbly walls.....

As all the above ^^^^ In the past I have used a couple blobs of grip fix to stick all the boxes in position then filled round them after with either bonding or drywall adhesive. This way you can get all the cables in then do the back filling all in one go. Be sure to prime the brick first...

additional sockets of insulation backed plasterboard

Are the boards fixed directly to the brick/blockwork? If not there maybe a gap behind you could fish cables down? If required though, you shouldn't worry too much about creating cold spots. The little bit of insulation you remove will, once back filled over the cables, be negligible.

    Armoured Cable Question.

I agree it looks like a separate TT system. The missing yellow conductor is likely to be the conductor that has been cut back coming from the swa, and left disconnected (the "earth" that James is concerned about). Difficult to see but the missing blue could be terminated in the same terminal as...

Regarding carrying out an EICR on my own home.

AFAIK, You don't need to be a member of a scheme to complete an EICR. However some mortgage lenders, landlords may insist on this. Others who are more up to date may offer you further advice

My EICR test guy says I need to change my bathroom ceiling light to an IP65 rated.

Has it been coded as a requirement or an advisory? It may well be justified, without the pics it's difficult to assess. However, there is no harm in asking the inspector to explain his reasoning behind the requirement.

    What's going on here?

As advised by Littlespark, plus I'd be tempted to check any other down lights elsewhere within the property and invest in swapping for LED's as Tel suggested.

They're Examining Our Plugs And Sockets...

My partner unplugs the iron after each use, great and sensible. However, the iron is left sitting on the ironing board with the lead draping down and the plug lying on the floor in the bedroom. Much to my pain and anguish as I, on many occasion, walked past it in the dark bare foot... you all...

UK Can I put a single socket next to a radiator?

As all the above^^^^ When adding additional sockets many considerations need to be made: location, cable routes, circuit protection, shock protection, ratings, suitability of the existing circuit, condition of the existing circuit, accessibility, intended use, testing, certification...

Hi all, just here to say hi and intraduce myself

Welcome, there's no such thing as daft questions, only daft answers! Be prepared for some friendly banter, I'll start by saying "intraduce" sounds a rather street way of saying "introduce" 😝 You will get plenty of constructive advice from the experienced and long serving members on this forum...

Dodgy trade pictures for your amusement! - 1 Million Views!

I agree setting out this correctly would have made all the difference to the finish. To be fair though looking at the picture the walls, ceiling and floor look very uneven so it may not have been possible to work in the 3 full tiles as you suggested. This though is no excuse for the lack of...
