    RCD Test, new Lighting Circuit

Having a brain fog moment this morning. I've just finished installing some new outside lights on a new circuit, and I need to do an RCD Test on the circuit. The RCD covers this lighting circuit + 3 others, one of which is a radial socket circuit in the garage. I obviously want to make sure...

PVC conduit at ground level external

Quick one. Is there anything in the regs that state safe zones for external placement of pvc conduit ? I've looked and can't see anything specific. Reason I ask is the installation I'm doing is needing me to run conduit at one brick above damp course.

House Alarm reset after isolation - who foots the bill

Thanks for the replies, and yes I deserved the kicking from some of you for not checking before hand. I agree with Spoon, where do you draw the line of responsibility for something not working when you power back up.

Car Suggestions - Pipe Carriers, Ladders

Looks like we've found a car that'll do the job, a 2006 Honda CR-V that has a side opening boot. After 2006 they switched to the usual hatch back design.

House Alarm reset after isolation - who foots the bill

This one has caught me out twice now. Needed to isolate power to house that has a battery backed up alarm. Unknown to me the battery was flat, so when I turned on the power the alarm reset to factory settings and wouldn't switch off, resulting in an call out to a security firm on a Sunday and...

    Test Probe recommendations

Hi, I've come across an unexpected problem. I've started to use the newer slimline wago 221 connectors, and when I came to do my continuity tests I found my kewtech test probes are too short to reach all the way inside the test port on the connectors. My KT63 is getting on a bit and I believe...

Car Suggestions - Pipe Carriers, Ladders

Hi, It's got to a point that our poor car just isn't cutting the mustard anymore. It was never designed to be used as an electricians car. Up to now I've managed, but I've got much bigger jobs coming up needing to work at height, transporting conduit and so on, so it has to go. With family...

Shock from a consumer unit even after Safe Isolation!

Thanks for the replies. I'm back on site on Sunday morning, as I'm adding a couple of MCB's so all the power will be switched off, so I'll check everything - I'll need to anyway for the remainder of the paperwork (Ze, RCD tests and so on), so if anything is amiss it'll show up. Yes, a faulty...

Shock from a consumer unit even after Safe Isolation!

It was just a short sharp pain to my finger as if I'd touched something hot, but you could feel the buzz. To be honest it happened so fast (and I moved away pretty damn quick) I'm not sure if I had pain anywhere else (btw I was wearing proper electricians insulated boots). The tip of my finger...

Shock from a consumer unit even after Safe Isolation!

Not a big one, but it bloody hurt and scared the pants of me! If anyone reading the following knows why this happened I'm all ears. I safely isolated a garage consumer unit, but didn't turn off the associated MCB in the house, so the tails to the unit were still live, ready to put in a new...

Contactor for outside lights on a PIR - Opinion requested

Hi I wondered what opinions would be on the following. I have installed 2 20W LED floodlights which will be controlled by a PIR and a 3 position switch to override the function of the PIR. The manual of the PIR seems to imply that if it used to control more than one light it should be via a...

    Smoke from a Dimmer Switch

Just to update. When I investigated, I found a transformer that was not only a non-dimmable one, but not rated correctly for the lights. So currently the client has a standard 1-way switch, and we are discussing a way forward.

    Smoke from a Dimmer Switch

Yes it replaced a regular two way. So it had a line, and switched line to the back of the switch, no neutral. My obvious thought is that either the driver is of a non-dimmable type or the LED's are or both, or the driver is totally of the wrong type for the load or any combination in between...

    Smoke from a Dimmer Switch

Got called out last week to some failed Kitchen Lights. They had a rather clever smart dimmer switch which usefully had a led light on it to say when it was working and connected to a smartphone. This was off, so I immediately suspected the switch as a point of failure, which it was. Anyway...

10A MCB protecting a Radial in a Garage.

They are planning to use a patio heater, which is what made me think the install wouldn't be up to spec, oh and yes there is an RCD...one on the whole house which is in the main DB, which I know isn't ideal. I suppose I could have spec'd a 20A RCBO for the garage DB. All the "new" housing...

10A MCB protecting a Radial in a Garage.

They have 4mm SWA which can take 43A burried, and as for the regs, its Fig 15B in Appendix 15 which references 433.1, which states 20A for 2.5mm, 30 or 32A for 4mm. Also Appendix H in the OSG

10A MCB protecting a Radial in a Garage.

This should have been a straight forward install, and maybe it should be and I'm just being an a***, so be interested to know what you would have done if presented with the same thing. Got called out to quote for an Outdoor Double Socket to go on the back of a garage. The house is reasonably...

Ring Final Test - Neutral >19.99kOhms

Well, the client has decided not to pursue the fault, so I've backed away from doing the install. I've put it in writing that there is a fault that needs to be dealt with, so if anything happens subsequently I can't be bitten by it.

Ring Final Test - Neutral >19.99kOhms

Thanks. That's what I thought. So much for a simple Outdoor socket install, and I've got another ring final extension to do tomorrow...joy! Ring Final faults must cost us so much time and money.

Ring Final Test - Neutral >19.99kOhms

Just checking, what I think I already believe. Doing a pre-install test of some outdoor sockets on a ring final. So far, confirmed bonding, incoming polarity, Ze and Pfc and RCD Test on circuit, everything fine and within regs. However on testing Ring Final, Line came out fine (0.7), Neutral...
