Straight pull out the top would have been easier, not sure why it wasn't done that way, possibly partially blocked by rafter or similar. But I did feel for the guy..each time it seemed like he was starting to get a run at it the sheathing crumbled away again, almost felt his heart sink each time...
Agreed that polarity check should have been carried out before and after the meter change...but I did notice the comment of 'the electrician said the connections were reversed at the consumer unit' live to neutral and neutral to live... Most people I've spoken to the meter fitter does not...
I think your theory for how to connect the new light to the old light connections is probably OK. I do wonder though if while mounting the new steel bracket you might have nicked the insulation on the cables in the old ceiling rose and now have a short circuit causing your breaker to trip.
If you intend to use the existing cables but now bypass the transformer and use mains voltage, bear in mind that from the photo they look like 2 core flex so have no earth conductor in them.

That's nothing just looked at the interconnect leads... Audio quest fire analogue, 1.5mtr, xlr terminations.... I won't spoil the surprise but it might make your eyes water. I guess if you in at this level you don't flinch at the prices
I can't remember if it was John Ward or Big Clive stripped a socket plate (may or may not have had integral USB). But the two earth terminals were not interconnected
Hang on, He's that drunk he thinks he can cut the camera down, but on being approached he put the saw in the back of his Van......The fact that this would intimate that he drove there in this condition...nothing mentioned ??
