    Favourite brand for sockets?

Click Mode CMA051 13 amp fused connection unit with flex outlet DP switched brilliant white plastic: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home Doesn't look as great as the normal cord grip's you see on MK, but the flex outlet on the click mode isn't that bad

    Favourite brand for sockets?

Same here. Click Mode for accessories and Hager for consumer units + breakers. Im a creature of habit. Like you, i've never had a failure (touch wood) so stick to what i know.

Overheating dual oven/grill element trips RCD; replace regulator or the element?

Can't really advise this online mate - best bet is to get a local spark to have a check. As you said it was working before fine, it could be the element but it also could be the RCD thats faulty, or the wiring...

    Power shower wiring

Umm, i hope not ... Also ... table 52.3 BS7671 minimum CSA for power circuits = 1.5mm I know you're supposed to follow manufactures instructions - but it would be nice if the manufactures actually consulted the regs them selves on occasions and got themselves at least a little bit in sink.

    Strange loop values

The joy's of testing. Get your patience hat on and get digging. My bets it's the last place you check :)

    Strange loop values

You're 95% correct. I always have an issue with the term loose connection. It's poor connection to me. It doesn't necessarily mean theres a 'loose connection' anywhere - as you've pointed out you can't find it. You could literally open every single socket and find everything tight. It could...

    Aussie sparky moving to UK

Any dick + dom can be an electrician over here. Just be prepared to work with some numbskulls who don't know the first thing about electrics pretending to be electricians.
  9. markc123

    Does this happen to you?

Agreed, but all the other trades are either failed electricians or people who just realised they weren't clever enough before hand so opted for another trade. You can't have adult conversations with dimwits :smug:

    Dressing diamond bits

haha very true! but you'll give some of the old boys on here a heart attack if they see you using sexual innuendos

    Dressing diamond bits

There's nothing more i can add to this thread, other that repeat what the lads have already put. But... This.

    Calibration

Take it into your local wholesaler - or the main one in your area. They often have set days where they get someone to come into the wholesaler and you can book yourself in. You can calibrate yourself of course, but buying your own calibration equipment requires you to re-mortgage your house.

Survey: Majority of schools 'don't understand' apprenticeships

It's all very well them doing these surveys, but what are they actually going to do about it? It's obvious to anyone that you learn more out on the job than you do in the classroom. Theory is important i agree, but you can't learn experience. Even down to the smallest of jobs that aren't even...

    Insulation Resistence on ring main

I've always put a line through any box thats not needed / irrelevant - cert's can be modified by numpties. Won't matter if you have hard copies of the cert, i.e. the tracing paper underneath, but i was always told just incase, make sure every box has at least something in.

We're not all old and grey you know Mike lol :wink5::leaving:

    shed consumer unit

Funny isn't it ... there was a time when this thread would actually be quite offending in the fact that the OP doesn't believe what his 'professional' spark is telling him. Undermining him bit ect... However, with the state of some of the 'electricians' these days + the media stories of 'cowboy...

Why do my bathroom light switches keep failing?

They don't make things like they used to though mate, i still think along with the other's, they're being pulled too hard. However, I'm happy to go with your suggestion as well - you've got a really strong ghost in your house.

    Which course?

I can't force you too take the 2394/2395 because they are actually classed as optional extras, but what i can do is strongly advise you take them - if anything goes wrong, your neck is on the line. If worst came to worst and you ended up in court, having these qualifications shows that you know...

    Which course?

The furthest you're going to do is put a new consumer unit in ... lol ... i like how you make it sound a walk in the park. CU upgrade / replacements are often filled with floors. E.g. borrowed neutrals. What quite a few sparks don't do, and pay for later is not doing some basics testing before...
