    I need some help! Please!

They use all kinds of funny arrangements. 240V delta with one phase centre grounded would give you 120-120-208 to earth and 240V between hot-legs.

    Pride in your work.

Ewww... I'd be making our first year redo that abomination, much less a 'fully qualified' tradie

    Jason's Story (Please read)

Came across this on my Aussie forum today. 20yo labourer, electrocuted on his 9th day of work. Electrical Contractor staring down the barrel of prison time. Jason's Story (YouTube) Another sad example of a string of easily fixed issues that have come together to end one life and shatter many...

New member fairly new to electrics!

It's not an absolute rule, just PM Paul.M or one of the other admins; you're quite clearly in training even if not presently in college.

    We have a winner gentlemen.

    Whats your favourite

My laugh out loud favourite is a scene from Mr Bean where he's trying to paint his flat using a stick of dynamite in a paint can. The other poor gentleman comes in to retrieve his hat just as it goes off, leaving a silhouette on the wallpaper.

    three phase rcd

My tradesman got caught out by one of these the other week. Scratching his head why the 30A 3-phase drives were running fine but a piddly little burner tripped the 200A main switch every time. Turns out another worker had left the neutral out of the main RCD.

    Police warning

All my personal data was stolen in both the Ashley Madison and Patreon hacks, but thankfully they were nice enough to delete it for only 1 Bitcoin.

Paid Work Opportunity for a Trainee

If only I was in England I'd ask my master for time off to come help. Great opportunity for one or two trainees, hope they jump at it.

    Daylight Tubes

What you may wish to investigate is the CRI (Colour Rendering Index) requirements. If this kitchen is preparing products that have to meet certain appearance criteria they may need good colour reproduction.

    Pet hates

People who modify panels and don't update the drawings. Nothing I love more than trying to trace control wiring at 5:30 on a Friday afternoon.

    A question from a mate

My answer is that the switch will have no effect, they've driven the elements in star and the whole neutral wire could be removed with no change. 6kW.

    A question from a mate

So, 6kW open and closed or did I miss the gotcha?

    A question from a mate

Nice one. I've got my mental answer, which depends entirely on whether they've used a switch before or after the star point.

VFD for old Myford ML8 wood lathe (0.5HP, single phase)

Well, how about that. I'll have to do some more research before I start designing systems myself.

VFD for old Myford ML8 wood lathe (0.5HP, single phase)

Are you sure about that Marvo? I only ask as my master has told me that single-three phase VFDs can only output up to the voltage they are supplied. What we tend to do with them is wire the motor delta but treat it like star, the voltages balance out that way.

    MCB Selection

Guess I've got it lucky over here, all domestic switchgear has to comply to the same set of standards, one manufacturer can't forbid using another's product. We can buy a Hager enclosure, fill it with Clipsal and NHP breakers and all's well. Different in industry where chassis and faceplates...

Advice on becoming an electrician ??

My advice would be that unless you can walk out the school door and straight into a job, stick it out for the next year. I know you're not enjoying your time, but that bit of paper at the end can mean a lot to future employers. 'I left school early for my trade' used to be nothing unusual, but...

How to test if 2A (2000 mA) USB mains plug really is 2A?

Measuring the current draw of the charger is easy with a clamp meter and breakout cable, but won't be very informative as the efficiency is unknown, and can vary widely. Measuring the DC amps could be done by butchering a cable to get access to the wires, then using a multimeter or low range DC...
