Hi guys it's been a while since I've been on here, but I got called to a job today for an electric shower tripping the mcb.
Upon investigation the shower is 9.8kw on a 32amp type b mcb. My first thought was it's being wrongly rated but I decided to carry on with a few checks. whilst on it...
I found the fault location, I managed to gauge the route of the lighting cables and because the test wasn't clear from the c/u I went in the loft and tested legs from the junction boxes and manged to find it that way
Yes I did show the client the cable and tried to explain the best I could about how I thought the cable failed I think they were just happy that the outside light were working.
It was in a small section on trunking leading down from the loft to a switch in the kitchen, I first thought it may have been rats so I went from one end of the loft to the other and the installation appears to be in very good order, new cables but the damaged cable I found were the old colours...
Hi guys bit late but thought I'd follow upi found the fault on a switch feed for an outside light, but on investigation there were no nails that had pierced the cable, so just for my own satisfaction what could of caused the cable to burn out so far down the cable?
Cheers
I thought they were centre tapped and the metal enclosure would be earthed.
Cheers for the advice I'm back on Friday so I'll reply back Friday with a picture
Yes in the bathroom there 12v down lights Murdock, I've never come across a transformer failing could this cause a live to earth fault? And is it a common fault?
Cheers for the reply
No tests at all yet Lee, as my tester is being calibrated, I'm back Friday morning, tester an all. Just thought I'd ask the question and get a point in the right direction.
Hi guys, just after some advice. Went to a job today with the description that one rcd on a dual board has tripped and when closed trips instantly, the customer was watching TV at night and all of a sudden the lights and sockets went under normal running conditions. I arrived today and the rcd...
Cheers for the help, I do have the books but I've been through them that many times the words all look the same, I've got tonight and all day tomorrow before my test so I'll stuck into a few books from now until 6pm tomorrow
Iam getting ready to sit my written part fr 2394 and theres acouple of inspections im struggling wih.
one of the practice qestions mentioned listing 5 checks you would carry out and the reason why

I completed my electrical apprentership but changed jobs to cable jointing. If the cable your talking about is coming out of a substation its either PILC or waveform and if you clean the cable back around 2meters it will state the size. Also if your changing lights to LED's your max load will...
Without a doubt I would always recommend to the customer that rcd protection in locations of increased risk of shock is a must to comply with the current regs. I've even turned work away for work in bathrooms that aren't rcd protected(old fuse boards etc....) after recommending an up grade and...
I always got told in old properties that don't have RCD protection in areas with increased risk of electric shock, you supplementary bond metal work that can be simultaneously touched
Don't take what you see on the fuse carrier as final mate, I do cable jointing and a service joint includes installing the series 7 pme cutout , even though it states 100amp it could well be 60 or 80
That's a different story all together mate, if you want to supply your cooker on an independent circuit of its own youll need you current design current and then choose a protective device with a suitable rated current ect ect ect ....
