I understand that XLPE cables operate at a maximum temperature of 90c compared with 70c for PVC insulation. What I don't understand is why the increased temperature permits a reduction in conductor size if XLPE insulated cables are used in preference to cables having PVC insulation.
If the...

Just your thoughts on this one, recently did a bit of work at a factory unit, there are several units being used by a company.
The electrics are really pretty bad,my concern is main bonding of structural metal work, can't really see any Earth conductors to these.
In the one area there are steels...
Any thoughts about connecting main protective bonding conductors into the MET instead of distribution boards?
Watched a spark do it the other day and never really thought about it myself. Achieves the same result so it shouldn't be an issue.
Have been sizeing up the size of armour on diffent SWA cables to make sure they are suitable to be protective conductors. Come across table 8.8 page 100 .on this table it says maximum bs88 fuse size (for example) 120mm 4core is 500a, when it also says current carrying capacity is 335 method c...
Just a quick one. Testing a house that's install is about 20 year old. Obviously hasn't got a metal clad DB, earthing is only 10mm. Would you put these down in the reccomendations? Even though these items were perfectly fine when it was installed?

Hi all,
this is my first post on here. I have searched the web but cant find a straight forwards answer (or an answer at all) for this question which is part of my c&g course.
- how is pvc insulation protected against high temperature in batten holder type fittings?
and also
- why do the...
hi everyone,
I have got a job to do in a local hairdresser to change a consumer unit fed off an economy 7 meter.
My question is do you need to test and notify the works like you would in a domestic dwelling? Also is it mandatory that the incoming services of water/gas are bonded with 10mm...
Copied this from trainee section to see if I can get an answer, it is talked about a lot on the forum but reading through the old posts I can't determine whether I'm right or wrong.
What I'm looking to understand is sub main earthing conductors. Is what I am saying right?
So a sub main to an...
Now I know this has probably been covered a few times but I'm struggling to come to terms with my own calculations.
I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if my calculations are correct.
So basically I've done a periodic and some of the CPC sizes for sub mains are less than half the...
Hi all, have a question about an earth marshaling point. Just looked at a building where there is no bonding present at the incoming water stop cock (although a bond has been made somewhere, from a sub CU).
If i put a clamp on the incoming water is it acceptable to run a cable to earth bar of a...
i have to send a 75meter run of a 3 core 25mm armoured from the meter to the fuse board. now due to the lenth i have to have a switched fuse and possibly a isolator on the otherside. due to the earth being 25mm i know alot of isolators only take 16mm.
is the use of a helely block perfered to...
Hi all
I have many single sockets in my new place which I would like to upgrade to doubles if possible, however having removed a couple of the face plates I have noticed that I am unable to remove the back boxes as they are 'cable tied' by a red cable looping from the back to the top.
I have...

I'm trying to understand the different ways I can calculate or find the correct size of main earting conductor of an installation. Iv found a formula but it's quite long winded. Is there an quicker process?
Here is what I have at the moment after doing some research and practice
Recently qualified and started working for a company that don't put a fly lead from socket outlets to back boxes and ceiling roses to conduit boxes etc. The engineer says you don't need them because the circuit has its own CPC and the conduit isn't being used as an earth.
My understanding was...

I've recently done a C&G 2396 Electrical Design Course and unfortunately the tutor who taught the course did so for the first time and in my opinion didn't do a good job of teaching the material. I'm now doing my revision for an exam this Thursday and trying to make sure all the formula I use...
I would like you guys to give me some input on what to code this picture as, I was thinking C3.
Also, I'm not sure whether the main earthing conductor and main protective bonding is 6mm or 10mm. They were both the same. Forgot the caliper today... I'm erring on the side that it might be 6mm...
I have a job coming up the week after next where I have to terminate a 50mm solid core incomer into a Schneider standard 125A single phase main switch in an acti 9 board.
The plan I have come up with is to get the little adaptors Schneider make to allow a lugged connection to be made to the...
I took a glance at my CU the other day and noticed the main earthing conductor was terminated into a terminal block and then terminated to the supply earth. This seemed odd to me and also it didn't look very good. Why not terminate it straight to the supply earth? Should I contact my supplier?
I'm a little confused as to where the responsibility lies for the conductor described in the title. You know the type - on old TN supplies where you've got a bare multistrand conductor coming from the sheath to the M.E.T that's always of a fairly piddly CSA.
My understanding is that this is the...
