New flex for old metal lamp

Hi everyone I inherited an old WW2 angle poise metal lamp recently. It works fine, but I'm not sure it's safe... the wire looks antique and is obviously just 2 cores. I've thought about putting a new cable in it, and I'm guessing that it needs earthing as it's a metal lamp. Can anyone advise...

0.75mm2 flex for fixed equipment - reality check.

Hi Folks I've never thought twice about using 0.75mm2 flex for connecting fixed equipment (e.g. extractor fan in window) to a fused connection unit with 3A fuse where this is sufficient for the load of the equipment. But table 52.3 of BS7671 states minimum csa for copper cable in lighting...

Tuff flex for installation in summer house/shed

As per the title, seen a few of these type of installations knocked out by summer house companies & electricians, flex from small CU to sockets and lighting, clipped and stuffing glands at accesories, IMHO looks better than T&E clipped direct any detrimental views?

    flex for fire rated downlights?

I'm a bit confused about using the bit of white heat resistant flex for downlights. Do we really need it on fire rated downlights? Isn't it just an extra unnessasary connection? Why not take the 1.5 standard T&E straight from the Hager (or similar) junction box to light? I'm still trying...

    Extending table lamp flex

I have a table lamp fitted with 2 core 0.75mm flex. I wish to extend the length of the cable but only have 2 core 1.5mm flex to hand. Can I use this, or must the flex be the same diameter both sides of the join. Sorry if this is a ridiculous question. Thank you for your advice.

    Flex for fixed wiring

Would you suggest flex for fixed wiring on an EICR is a C3? The client has basically run flex from one socket to a surface socket (i.e. a glorified extension lead). However I would say this is fixed wiring. What does 521.9.1 mean where it states "only where the the relevant provisions of the...

Would an extension lead from old socket and flex be ok to use?

Hi everybody, Could I use an old socket and some 1.5 mm2 flex to make an extension lead, wired up to a rubber plug top? I love to use old materials up so they don't go to waste, especially old MK sockets, very robust. It could be just light duty portable power, just as and when I need it! The...

Insulation resistance failure on rubber flex. Why?

Two years ago I installed some garden lighting, using u/g SWA to Wiska boxes, then 3-core 0.75mm rubber flex downleads from each LED fitting. This week the 30mA RCBO kept tripping. I assumed a luminaire fault, or moisture in a Wiska box, but no. It was leakage across all three cores of one 10m...

Profestional alarm install, mains supply 0.5mm2 flex into back of a socket

Hi, My parents have had a new alarm fitted. I visit and discover the work as shown below. I would suspect that BS7671 does not approve of 0.5mm2 flex being protected by a B type 32A breaker for short circuit proteciton. What is the best way to address this with the alarm company?
