Hi everyone, I am not an electrician and have joined this forum for some help. Here is some background information to my incident:-
Background
House Built 1985
Took ownership December 1999
Electricity meter replaced by electricity supplier 12 January 2004
Consumer unit upgraded 16 January 2008...
How would you code the following?
No RCD protection. I coded c2
Not amendment 3 compliant. I coded C3
Meter tails 16mm. I coded C3
Tested the installation and the test results were all compliant with BS7671.
What's everyone's thoughts on installing meter tails >3 meters in length.
I've contacted northern power grid who said the tails where down to the electricity suppliers discretion.
Contacted the electricity supplier who didn't give a definite answer, basically do what you want!?
Hi all, what are your thoughts on running new tails from an outdoor recessed meter box, straight through the existing hole into the garage where the CU is situated. Should the hole be enlarged to accommodate some sort or trunking for protection and sealed for fire??? The tails are connected to a...
Hi. I've recently moved into new house. The meter box and consumer unit are installed in cupboard underneath the stairs, however they are approx. 1.5m apart and the tails are surface mounted. Should they be encased in trunking so as to protect them from damage. Thanks
Hey guys. Wondering if anyone has came across this before and if it is legal? It is several 1.5mm single cores going into the neutral of the main switch. Main fuse etc is several metres away in communal hallway, but is a 16mm meter tail from there.
Cheers
Hi,
On site dispute needs sorting.
We have a consumer unit 3m away as in distance (not cable length) from DNO (outside meter box, flush with wall).
We currently have a 25mm 3 core SWA from DNO to consumer unit. Running within the fabric of building and it's protected from the nails and the like...
Been to a job to see this. I'm guessing that when the old CU was replaced the sparks didn't bother to remove the old meter tails - they were live and just had a couple of wraps of insulation tape round them.
Morning fellas,
Just a quick question if you don't mind,
Doing a EICR and came across what looks like 6mm tails from the meter to the rcd,
iv never seen tails thats small before,
the dno fuse is 60a and its a tt system.
What code would you use please,
Many thanks :)
Afternoon all been a while since I've posted.
at today's job I noticed 10mm meter tails with 6mm bonding and although my first thoughts were tails should be min 16mm and bonding 10mm
so at the risk of sounding stupid I couldn't find the exact reason why this was wrong as the 10mm would take...
Hi Everyone
can the meter tails be buried in the wall and if so do they need to be protected by a RCD or not. The consumer unit has 30ma RCBO's . Can we put 100ma RCD as a Isolator. we were thinking of putting a type C RCD to protect the tails.
thank you
I have recently joined NICEIC. I have done a few jobs since but got asked to quote to replace a consumer unit. Whilst 'quoting' and doing a inspection of the installation. Bonding, CPC in lighting etc. I took a few photos (as I have crap memory).
The consumer unit is being supplied via what...
Hello all, new member, first post.
I've just had my meter moved by the DNO who put it outside. We've had a local spark wire it from the meter to the c/u, and he installed an isolator switch at the same time, which is also outside in a weather proof box.
The tails run from the bottom of the meter...
Hi guys!
New to forums,
i have my niceic assessment in a couple of weeks, changed the consumer unit and all tests were fine, the only thing I was unable to do was change the 16mm meter tails (without destroying the house). The main fuse is 100amp. Will I fail if these are not changed.

Hi guys,
I have consumer unit to change and i need to change the meter tails.
The setup is the meter box outside and the consumer unit is high level in the kitchen, the meter tails are presently run up the out side wall about two metres then through the wall to the consumer unit with minimal...
Hello,
Been asked to do some work in a building consisting of 5 flats which are being redeveloped. At the minute, the distribution circuits to each flat consist of a 60a switch fuse with a 10mm CPC and 25mm line and neutral cables usually used as meter tails.
They are all in trunking and the...
I have been approached to 2nd fix a job someone started
but failed to finish due to ill health (apparently)
this guy has buried the meter tails which I estimate at about
6-8 meters (25 mm16mm earth) taken into the outside enclosure
I like to know peoples thoughts on this please
I'm thinking...
This has probably been asked before but want to make sure I am on the right track with this.
Am working at a house which has been re-wired ( apparently, but who puts 4mm radials in now adays ). The split load CU has 25mm tails to the meter. From the meter to the cutout its wired in what looks...
Hi I wonder if anyone to clear something up for me.
i have a customer who wants a consumer unit located in a more convenient position for them and the house users...main fuse and CU would be slightly longer than 3m (say 4m) and they wanted the meter tails run above a plasterboard ceiling (in...
Clarifiation please !
I have read somewhere, maybe in BS7671 or on a forum site regulation that states that 16mm meter tails can or should be used on supplies rated at 80amps or under and 25mm tails on supplies rated at 100amps.
I have scoured BS7671 and various forums but cannot find this...
