cmp260

my house has 100ms time delay rcd main switch. why would this have been installed in a house? is it legal?
thanks

No Spoon, I think your confussing the whole thing with '"Camp Fridays"..... but think that was banned due to the sexual frustration of plumbers and the like.....

cmp260.......just run the cable in white surface mini-trunking tucked up in the corner of ceiling.

Or better still, dont run it to the stop cock if not practical, pick up the water pipe with the bonding conductor where it is practical ie, nearer to the met or consumer unit, not a problem as long as its mentioned on certificate.

Im concerned about how it looks though, there is coving around the ceiling and trunking will be quite obvious wheras a wire tucked in beside the coving and painted white would be a lot less obtrusive. but obviously can do this if it wont pass. So would it pass?

oh thats new info! I was under the impression that the law says it has to be within 600 mm of stopcock? am i wrong?

Would it pass? possibly, but would look awful...theres lots of different sizes of mini trunking, some very small and some of these would easily blend into the coving especially when painted. IMO if its not practical to get to stop cock do as I said earlier.

Hint,

there is a nice big gap behind most covings and tools that make it easy for sparks to fish cable through these routes

Jonnym just to clarify that, if its unpractical to run a new earth conductor to stopcock, then bonding to nearest cold water pipe would pass bs7671 -and eicr?
provided of course the pipe is earthed...

Des, thanks for that, thats a possiblilty, Im not hopeful though, the previous homeowner was a bodger -its proably filled with old newspaper, I know it was at the top of the pipe running from stopcock to ceiling anyway,,,

The conductor your talking about is a "protective bonding conductor"

The Regs state "The main equipotential bonding connection to any gas, water or other service shall be made as near as practicable to the point of entry of that service into the premises"

So it comes down to the interpretation of "Practicable" and could be interpreted differently by different electricians. It is difficult to give you a more presise answer without having had a look at your install......so as said previously get an electrician in to have a look and take his advice, cos thats what you will be paying for..........and IMO stay clear of sites like "my ----ers dot con" look in your local free mag/paper bet theres loads of good electricians near you and the vast majority do not want to rip you off.

The chances are there was nasty big hole where the pipes enter the ceiling and it will be clear after that
Even if you have to cut access points in places along the ends of the coving,at leats it can be filled, the cable is out of sight,it's in the right place and you can do this job yourself

i hear that about mytosser.com, Ive just got off the phone with the guy who did the work again. he said he has sent me an email, no sign of it... I was ready to hire him back to complete the job but now im getting seriously ****ed off.
