Thanks for the input Baal.

Its interesting to hear from the "horses mouth" how C&G actually work these situations.

I agree to with lenny
you have to read the questions a few times as they word it badly and you can easily answer incorrectly through not reading and understanding before answering good luck mate keep revising and take your time when answering I was rushing and finished in 1 hour 40 mins then looked about and everyone was still writing so i went over it all about three more times and found one question number 17 that i read completly wrongly so crossed out and put a note saying please go to end to see q17 lol must have worked as i passed first time and I had no experience of testing 3 phase but learned over the four months of study every day all day and im not joking its not easy but if you put your mind to it and your determined its possible Good luck to John
I'm starting the 2391 shortly...but hanv't any on-site exp just yet...but i'm reading up, will i be ok, thx in advance:D

Hi Jason,

The feedback from C&G is pretty poor, the chief examiners report looks almost identical exam to exam and most training providers are left to work out student's areas of weakness to attempt to plug the hole at the next intake!

Hi Breakerman,

I take it you mean on-site experience of testing as opposed to 'any on-site experience' ?

Study Guidance Note 3 and get the City & Guilds exam success book for an insight into how they want to see questions answered and what formats to use.

If you can tag along with a decent testing chap for a day or 2, you will gain more experience than a week with Guidance Note 3!

Then stude Guidance Note 3 again and again and again! ;)

Im not surprised TBH.

They never were that good, even back when i took them.

ye' that's gr8, actually iv'e had hardly any on-site exp testing or otherwise, but i'm all geared up with the relevant books, and i'll be adding giudence note 3 to the list...I got exp coming up...I note that's the better of the two.. cheers for that:)

yeah mate I had no experience of testing three phase and i am not working in the industry at the moment so I just studied non stop every day all day for four months
reading GN3 over and over
bs7671 especially section 6 and 7
on site guide
memorandum of guidance on electricity at work regs
learn safe isolation procedures
Gs 38
exam success
lots of sample papers over and over
writing test procedures over and over for different situations and circuits with diagrams and without also with calculations if necessarry ie contiuity of ring final circuit conductors
learn correct terminology for eveything
practice calculating for resistances for circuits and then transpose to calculate length etc
read lots of different books on inspecting and testing
i.e scaddons guide and cristopher kitchers guide to inspecting ad testing
all the posts on here as well as posting my own questions
if ya can practice testing or as stated get some experience with somebody not as easy as said with how things are
draw earth fault loop diagrams for all systems and fully label
as well as pscc fault paths for the systems just in case
learn all points of earth fault loop path
A lot of this was covered in course but a some wasnt
keep going through your course notes also mate just revise as much as you possibly can
its possible to pass with no experience as i did good luck to you

Can't understand why people think Prospective Fault Current needs to be tested with the installation isolated.

Also see functional tests mentioned. These can't possibly be done until the installation is energised.

Agreed.

Nobody has mentioned 'continuity of ring final circuit conductors' either - if the test was necessary, I wouldn't fancy doing it in a 'live' CU either. (i.e. with other circuits energised)

Ze
Continuity of earthing conductor
Continuity of main bonding conductors

These the only 3 tests that can not be carried out after supply is restored

So you would do IR testing on a 'live' installation/CU?

So you would do 'Continuity of Ring Final circuit conductors' in a 'live' CU?

Continuity of the 'Earthing Conductor' is verified with the Ze measurement:) and would take about 90 seconds.

It wouldn't always be necessary to disconnect a bonding conductor either, so I don't think that test would count.:)

on 2391; got to look at IP codes, also 4 practical assesments (1) installation inspection-12 faults to find (2) insulation resistance 6 faults (3) earth fault loop-impedance test (4) three phase+sigle phase testing TPN dist board-feeds sib mains consumer unit+ DOS...phew' lots of stuff, any input on this would be fab... :(cheers
