Hi, just left a job which goin back to tomoz but as was leavin the customer asked I could look at her tiolet light so did quick and it was ya simple one way sw, at the light there was a twin and at sw a twin but when the light sw is off there is no power on either core at sw but wen u sw it on yes the light comes on and one of the cores at sw is then live, I belled from sw to light and the black from the sw goes up to N at light but the live don't, so obv they sent N to sw which is serving no purpose but the live don't bell through so obv assuming there is a jb somewhere but don't know if I bein thick but for some reason can't think why u only gettin power to sw wen u turn it on and not perm feed at it with sw wire out, sorry if u lost the story abit after how much iv typed dwn any help would be great, I pretty sure it simple but I must be brain dead

Perhaps some proper spelling & punctuation would have helped?

If N is connected to one side of switch and live straight to light then when the switch is off there will be a live at the switch as long as there is a lamp in!!!!!! if the lamp is removed you will have nothing at the switch.

Stop having a go at his spelling, seems like he was a bit frustrated at the time.

Tony mc has given you the answer, you've got live feed on the light then neutral from the light to the switch therefore not a complete circuit until you switch it on. It happens when people don't dead test or have not indicated the wires correctly, or it could be a diyer that has changed the switch wrongly but it works so every thing is fine?

good explanation. beats the wet finger test.

I would agree with Steve 1412 comments but can't stop thinking we have not got the full story. Why have you been asked to check something that would be appear to be working? Has somebody done something and you are being asked to check if it has been done correctly?

Forgot to mention Steve 1412, sorry mate.

It does sound like a diyer checking if its ok NMc. Oh well in the end its not saved any money coz hopefully the op has charged for his extra time sorting this out.

I agree, one side of the switch will be at the nominal voltage providing the lamps fitted, its only when the circuit is made that the voltage across the lamp will drop

to be pedantic, the voltage across the lamp will rise to nominal voltage, thus removing the volts from the switched neutral

Couple of questions:
What kind of light is it?
What voltage are you getting at the switch when the light is on?
How well do you know the customer?
If it works OK why were you asked to "look at" it, and is it a case of "look at" or "find out what's wrong with"?

Years ago when I was working at the Carphone Warehouse some wideboy came in with his mate; while he was waiting he gestured towards a picture of a trendy new handset which had only just been released and asked if we had one. I explained it was only just out so we didn't, then he produced one from a lanyard around his neck and said "I have".
Just a flitting thought - could it literally be a case of "look at", as in "oh yes, it's very nice", or when you tell the customer you don't know what's going on with it they reveal the ingenious way they wired it up using switched ELV through a relay.
I'm not being funny, but maybe the customer is.

If you were switching the neutral one side of the switch would still be live

Agreed, until switched, and the the voltage would be dropped across the lamp.

or

As the voltage drops across the lamp the potential difference increases across it.

I dont have an handbag, ill have to get one:D
