Inside my pre AM2 pack, we were told to use the braid for an earth of the extraneous conductive part, namely the braid. The braid must not be used as a CPC. The picture below the text shows the braid sleeved green / yellow connected to the backbox.

@LeeH What would you sleeve the braid? Or would you leave it?

The braid wouldn't be an extraneous conductive part.

"The galvanized braid is not considered suitable to use as a circuit protective conductor (CPC) for the cable, and it is also not considered to be an exposed conductive part.

The reason why it is not considered an exposed conductive part is that the cable meets the requirements of Regulation 412.2.4.1 of BS 7671 for protection against electric shock by means of the protective measure of double or reinforced insulation."

You need to do what they say to pass, but as it's not protective G/Y should not be used.

It's normally used as a fuctional earth, SY is commonly used to reduce EMI when using variable speed drives. Cream is the suggested colour.

And just to confuse you, SY is not really a suitable cable for VSDs as you cannot buy it without an internal CPC. It's non symectrical.

I agree cream would be the color to use on a site (Table 51 confirms this), however the pre AM2 we were specified to use green /yellow and I passed using that :)

Being as this is for his AM2, I recommended he use green / yellow because I know I passed using it.

Worst case, if you fail any unit, you just retake that unit. Lets hope it's not the installation if any because that's the most time consuming and expensive to retake.

When I took mine I was more worried about failing and having to pay to retake. Not to mention the 2 hour drive every morning to the nearest test center.

Just a heads up when you get the email, they are evil bastards, you have to do a survey before you get your results. Then you are welcomed by a long list of criteria and whether you passed them or not. If they are all green, your good :)
