All the cowboys will be polishing their spurs with glee now, all those C1s they can dish out for plastic CUs!

"I'm so sorry Mrs Jones, this a fire hazard and doesn't comply with the Regulations, you NEED a new CU."

Hence the need to contain any fire, however short inside the CU. How many installed CU's do you see on a wall on it's own, above a non combustible floor. Most are surrounded by books, coats etc, not to mention the floor below.

Still think it's gonna be interesting to see what the manufacturers come up with to comply with this reg. Cant see just using their existing metal clad CU's will.

I'll say it again then shall i, ....It doesn't seem to be a problem in Western Europe, and they use far, far more plastic DBs/Panels than in the UK.

From what I've seen on my limited travels, I wouldn't want any of their electrics in my house, or is that just being xenophobic! We'll be coming out of the EU soon anyway, the regs book will be half the size (still the same price!)

You're probably referring to the older Southern European holiday area installations, certainly not those of Germany, Austria, Dutch, French, etc... But then, as you say, you'll not see much with only ''Limited'' travels...

As for coming out of Europe, i doubt it, and even if you did it ain't gonna affect European harmonisation, and that you can take to the bank!!

Having read the posts re this issue, I'm sure most of us could think of better and perhaps more realistic things the IET and others could have spent their time on!

I always think that usually if you track the origin of a proposed change like this its someone's personal agenda ie someone's friends Auntie had a CU meltdown (caused by loose connections)

I think the whole thing is a bit of a farce really and will be very surprised if they do limit CU's to being of metal construction only !

Perhaps expanding intumescent material as used in recessed lighting also available for use in other enclosures retrofitted into existing CU's could be a cost effective way of containing a fire?

Well a rep brought a sample metal db in to my local wholesalers today to get some opinions and I have to say they are not the prettiest things, Contactum dual rcd with a hinged front lid. even he said he wouldn't want one in his home, but he is trying to get a few orders in his books.

Sad to say I can see a few members of this forum jumping on the “new law” to con customers into unnecessary work.
I can think of several charlatans on here that will be tugging at the bit to get out there and see how many they can nail.
