I know this thread is years old lol, so apologies for dragging it up, was just something I came accross.

But I also find them great for use on solid core cable, as above shown in the picture.

not only do they look more professional, but the twin entry ones are great for use inside the consumer units for ring circuits... and I also found while not usually a problem, solid core cable gets crushed slightly as you tighten the screw leaving an imprint from the screw.. if accidentally overtightened then it can lead to failure of that connection on thinner cables like 1.0 or 1.5 so I found these offer a little extra re-inforcement.

Until you need to test or split the ring!!

i hate twin bootlaces. Its a pain to add anything to the circuit later on, and you cant split them for fault finding. Im finding that a lot of panel manufacturers are using bootlace crimps more that the RYB ones, and im not always a fan. I often have to mod panels, to add something to a control circuit ect, and i hate having to shorten and recrimp cables, because double bootlacse have been used.
Maybe im a top class whinger!

I don't think a whinger John*, I've hated them from the day I first clapped eyes on them. More trouble than their worth, especialy if you're fault finding in a panel. I suppose my view is down to the first time I came acrross them, plant broken down and had to start pratting about with the damn things.

*Moaning so and so maybe.

I think i've mention before that on this and other projects, all our final distribution boards as well as any other panel cable connections are all via ferruel connections, be they single or double style ferrules. Also any flexible fine multi stranded connections are all via ferrule connections.

I wouldn't say it makes that much sense using crimped ferrule connections in a domestic installation, but certainly nothing wrong in doing so!! You'll find that a lot of our European cousins use ferrule connections as a matter of course at DB's and panels these days too..

I use them on every fine wire and multi wire. They cost a few pence and make it quicker and easier to terminate. Although the guy in wholesalers says no one else buys them only the refinery guys.

Even though this 3yr old thread is been re-booted(see what i did there!) the regulation still applies and yes ill agree how many of you crimp the flex when putting a plug top on..... that the only occasion i dont bother with but all other times i do, if you buy a pendant drop, clicks etc you will notice they have to comply too and the ends will be crimped..... i always crimp my flexes and tri-rated cables as you are supposed to.

PS unless using a connector designed specifically for these cables in which case you dont need to crimp the end.

I had someone on site the other week ask me about why I was using ferrules and how I was the only electrician he'd ever seen do it.

Can't see why anyone wouldn't want to, tbh - adds a couple of seconds on the job but makes it so much easier, neater and more compliant.

Me too thought it was the norm fine stranded cables need ferrules when terminated in this way

Yep, the classic case is when fly leads from RCBO's are cut to length, no-one ever seems to crimp these cut fly leads, going by the amount of photo's we see here, showin members CU installs.

Not in my boards - Neutrals all get 6mm'ed and where fitted, earths get a .75

Give it a good solid twist then double it over................you can feel the good connection as you tighten:)
Neva had a bad connection in 40 year lol.
Ferrules are useless done by people who don't give a damn......................

Panels I check now with crimps/ferrules are done by 'monkeys' who have no idea what they are doing.
Touch them and they become loose................

Increased safety my a............................
