There are 2 quite big firms here that get the bulk of large domestic & commercial contractors , neither have brilliant reputation, he as worked for both briefly, both, especially one has a revolving door when it comes to staff, sparks laid off all the time , the reason may be greed by the employer, there is no loyalty, when you get the quals and experience to demand ÂŁ13-15 an hour and you ask for it, your out the door And a guy who can do your job for ÂŁ9- ÂŁ10 is wheeled in, one of them has just laid off everybody two weeks ago and told them all to register as subbys with the revenue , get own vehicles and then come back. My mate bought my old van off me to go self employed but it hasn't quite worked out for him, so he took what I offered, he has no choice

Re: C&g 2330 adivice please

yeah see im not even close to his level but again why isnt he having his hand bit of hes got the qauls so is it just the onsite part thats not aloowing him to make his money ?
Because there isn't the work. We get guys coming on here all the time who have "invested" their redundancy payout in what they think is a lucrative career in a recession-proof trade, but the fact is a lot of experienced electricians are sitting at home on forums instead of being out making money. You tell people this and they think if there are electricians sitting at home fuming at the computer there must be a gap in the market which they previously filled, waiting to be snapped up by a plucky entrepreneur with a positive outlook and experience in a different field.

Generally speaking this isn't a trade where you get a fixed salary for a contracted amount of hours. It's 12 hour days 6 days one week, then a couple of hours the next.

Where's the NVQ going then? I'm on my C&G level 3 at the moment but am working the four other days doin my apprenticeship and I was planing to go back next September and start my nvq? My teachers haven't mentioned anything like this

You should be doing it as part of the level 3. Although completely seperate from the level 3 course, get onto them as you will need to do the AM2 in order to achieve the NVQ 3 as well as on site diary, chase them up.

Not really Liam, 2356 is a separate qualification fella, it is not part of 2330 level 3, as 2330 is underpinning knowledge and a technical certificate only, it can run along side the 2330 but its to late now

Morgan, the reality is that it probably is nigh on impossible for you to become an electrician at this stage in your life with your earning requirements to support your family in this climate.

Sadly, the fact of the matter is that some careers are simply closed doors to some people, no matter how keen they are. There are many things that I would be good at and like to become, but the fact of the matter is, at 36 and needing to continue to earn a certain amount, I just can't do it.

That's life.

I done my level 2 full time at college in a year that was 2330 but now I'm doin my level 3 2356 which I will finish in June/July time, when I mentioned to my teacher at college I was working he said best thing to do would be to start the nvq next year and do my am2. So what would be the replacement for the nvq ?

2357 is the new(er) course but I'm not really up on it and don't know if you can carry units from the 2330 into the 2357, you probably can, but not being involved in education anymore I couldn't say fir definite, but somebody will

yep...this is about the level of it.....the 2330 and the 2356 are being morphed into the new 2357.....so as both C&G courses are as one....you will need to be working in the trade to attain this qual......
apparantly its `what the industry has been crying out for...for years`....well, according to city & guilds it has anyway.....couldn`t have come at a worse time really as its likely to push the unwary down the 5 week wonder route.....
theres a few new modules as well on the new 2357 which wern`t covered by the old 2330 and 2356....dont ask me what they are off hand....
