Cable clips as per 18th edition.

Friends,

I'm rewiring my brothers house tomorrow. Can someone tell me if the new 18th edition allows me to use the plastic cable clips to secure the cables to joists etc?
Or do I have to replace them with metal ones?

I doubt very much that many false ceiling grids are rated as supporting structures for any services let alone to prevent premature collapse.

It’s not just the weight of the cables on the grid thats a problem, they shouldn’t be installed on the grid for numerous other reasons.. mainly due to the sharp edges that can cause damage to the cables

I agree, I've just pulled in 20 cat5e cables (supported properly) and my arm was aching, and that would be all weight that likely wasn't included in the design of a false ceiling if it wasn't properly supported. Ceiling grids probably aren't designed against premature collapse, but it's going to cause just as much trouble if/when it collapses as cable would.

That's most of the trouble. Come across one or two bits of T+E on the ceiling, but it's mostly data.

Generally speaking most false ceilings are not fire rated, ie metal fixings required. Cables should be adequately supported throughout length.....
Just cause others do it don't make it right.

Just done a surface fire alarm install, 90% normal clips but fire rated ones to ensure the cable cannot fall or create a hazard in such a situation..
The misconception is that all the fixings have to comply yet the install has to satisfy the point the run will not collapse and get tangled in the gear of the fire brigade so a fire rated clip in suitable positions will be adequate.

As far as i take it from the 18th edition. You can still use plastic clips and use steel tub tape every 1.2m or so. So in the event of a far and the plaster board coming down due to the fire or water from the fire fighter hose it will still keep the cables above head height stopping entanglement.

I ask this, again...
suppose you use metal clips on the rafters above a plasterboard ceiling...they will only prevent falling of the cables if they are securely nailed/screwed to the timber. Their lifespan in a conflagration will depend on the degree of annexation, surely? A small walldog in concrete or brick might be ok, but a small screw in timber might fail prematurely if the timber is subject to early burning on the surface...whereas a 6 inch nail will hold until the timber is well and truly burnt through
