Campaign for licensing!

If my old grey matter serves me correctly wasnt there a member who rattled on about something similar to this but I seem to remember he had a vested interest???

Im all for a Gas safe type scheme for us but my fear is who would fund it we have jib sjib select napit eicnic elesca esc loads and loads of "Schemes" and criteria for sparks approved ect ect part"P" domestic installer approved contractor
Im an SJIB Approved electrician working for an NICEIC Approved contractor in scotland Thankfully we dont have Part"P" here

It is not possible to become a competent electrician just by attending a short course and passing a few exams. It takes years of training and experience to become a Professional Electrician.

This should be good for time served sparks and hopefully get rid of these mates and others.

I've signed up. Great idea to have a licence for everyone that works with electricity, kind of like a driving licence before you go off and get a scheme(nic) insurance policy and breakdown cover (jib). A government backed nation wide licensing system to prove your level of competence to chase out the cowboys and the dangerous inexperienced sparkys. Let's see what support it gets.

L-E-C.org.uk - The Licensed Electricians Campaign

Very interesting, you may wish to sign, it's a start at least?

Great idea mate, but if you take my case for example the chicken JIBlets won't even recognise me as an electrician because I don't have my NVQ 3 yet. Despite the fact that I've been in the trade for over 10 years, have 2330, 17th and 2391. I've tried and tried and tried to secure employment with a firm, so that I can complete the NVQ but all to no avail. Now I know that this is a subject that splits opinions on this forum 50/50. I'd love to be able to complete the NVQ mate but it ain't that easy to get a start on the cards these days. So under these licencing rules, I'd be nothing more than a mate on 8 - 10 quid an hour... Now some might say tough, 'you're not a spark', but at the same time I certainly AIN'T no mate either. So people like me would be left in some kind of wilderness, caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Opinions please chaps.

im in the same boat as by june I should have the same quals as you but with the 2392 as well but like you said no one is taking on so I can't do my NVQ either.

Unfortunately these schemes do not promote safety.
The article (or whatever it is) refers to NZ and Australia. NZ stopped their scheme either the year before last, or the year before, Australia appears to be about to do the same.
In NZ, they found that injuries and fatalities decreased after the scheme ceased.

Spin, we have no scheme yet, you can't say 'these schemes don't promote safety' before the thing is developed!

Millwall Ken made valid points regarding grade criteria and there would undoubtedly be many other areas of concern and debate but at least keep an open mind on a blank canvass!

I'm only using the same criteria as used in the article.
It appears that one of the arguments for such a sceme, is that other countries have them.
In reality the other countries either do not have tham any more, or are considering abolishing them as they actually promote unsafe practices.

Thanks IQ, like I said mate, my worry would be for people like me. You and I ain't always seen eye to eye on subjects, but I believe that we both respect each other's opinion. However, the JIB won't.
The problem with the various schemes that the governing bodies put out, is that, they only see things in black or white - which is fair enough, but what makes me want to urinate, is the fact that, although they may say that they look at the merits of each case. They simply do not. One of my referees, for my last application to them was an electrical contracts manager, for a medium-sized firm. They still wasn't interested. And only graded me as a trainee electrician.
Why won't they take on board the opinions of people, whom are more than qualified to judge someone in their job?

Ken

Why have you got to be employed to complete your NVQ3 ? and how far in are you ?
I know that you can supposedly do the NVQ online mate, but I'd rather do it though a firm. Besides doing it online still means that you have to complete the required elements. Something that would be easier whilst working employed for a firm mate.
