The fact that it all tested OK, unless hubby is planning a night of random hole drilling in the walls, I say all is well Trev.

I'm trying to think of what else you could have done but I cant...

I was going to say 'fit a standalone RCD and connect to the new main switch', but thats just silly.
Also, have have a few RCBO's in stock which you could have swapped over for the MCB's, but again it means carrying too much stock in the van...

So, 'no', I cant see anything else you could have done Trev, much better to leave them with power in the cold weather, even without RCD for the night..... Was it a TT?

See post 11

You mean to say you used Hager main switch in a GET cu. Quick get back there as quick as possible you know you should never fit different manufactures switch gear in cu's.

No more than what was allowable on the 16th although supplementary bonding was in place in the special locations then , however all it stated then was that sockets require RCD protection , simply advise the customer of potential issue and advise equipment outside the house is not used, and isolate if necessary .as long as all tests are O/K especially Zs on all circuits , ensure an RCD is replaced at earliest time ,

In my defence, Your Honour, the main switch fits snugly on what is laughably called a din rail in GET CUs and is securely held on the bus bar. The neutral link is a solid piece of copper. That switch ain't going anywhere.

I'm also a bit worried, if there's two main switches in the CU now, how did you achieve discrimination between them? If they're the same current rating and one gets switched off there's no saying which one it would be..... very worrying indeed.

(moved to Chit Chat before someone takes seriously)

Oi Daftlad, I told you to keep shtum :)

Had similar Trev, on mine though I managed to fit another RCD in, although not the correct one for the board, obviously this was swapped out for the correct one asap.
This was an emergency an very temporary fix overnight, this was on a TN system so if I did not have an RCD that I could persuade to fit, then I probably would have done as you have here.

Had it been TT with a highish RA , if the Bonding lowered the Zdb and Zses low enough for fault protection then yes, if not then I would not be too happy leaving it in that state, then I would have maybe had to decline and ask if they had relatives or someone they could stay with overnight.

I can see your point though, and I really would have to weigh it up, stuff like this is never clear cut

Having said that I do keep a spare DP 80A RCD and enclosure anyway for just this situation.

You haven't said what the consumer unit supplies. Is it by any chance an off peak board for storage heaters which are all surface wired?

Either way I'd have done what you said as they are unlikely to drill holes in the wall or mow the lawn on a Sunday night!

I don't actually understand what this thread is about?
From what I understand, you assessed the risk and took what you considered to be appropriate action.
I don't really think you need to seek approval from the forum for your actions.

I don't think Trev is looking for approval from anyone Spin, he is experienced enough to do his own risk assessment ;)

I'm not seeking approval. As I said earlier, my conscience is clear and I'll sleep soundly tonight.
Here's something that I said I wasn't prepared to do just yet, my justification. Effectively what I have done is make a 3036 CU, there are thousands of these kicking around still and they're doing no one any harm.
I'll admit to hoping that someone would try to give me a beasting for it though:)
