They are horrible things Lee :)
100%, IMO worse than proteus and that's saying something lol. If I remember correct the GET schupa range the RCD is bigger than two modules. Wickes used to sell this crap marked up as their own range. Not sure if they still do,if you have trouble getting a GET RCD from a reputable wholesaler who wouldn't dream of stocking GET fuse boards lol.

The one I did was a Newlec (Neweys own poo), just as bad as GET/Proteus flimsy shyte, managed to fit a Wylex RCD in it Temporary. :)

Don't rate the newlec.......but way ahead of that other rubbish

I posted this up in the trainee forum as a discussion, all the lads in there have come up with the right answer so I thought I'd throw it out on here just to see what opinions are out there or who would try to give me a beasting. I can completely justify my actions although I have no intention of doing so for a while yet.

About 6pm my phone rang, a couple have lost all power and there's a fishy/burning smell hanging around. I got there to find a very pregnant woman and a 2 year old running around, her husband was there too (but that's largely irrelevant) So I go to the mains cupboard and find a GET CU with a main switch RCD with all circuits protected by it, all 6 circuits are on MCBs

The incoming live has been arcing and has burnt out the terminal and made the RCD go bang. The only thing I have to hand is a Hager 100 amp main switch which I swap for the knackered RCD. Everything tests out absolutely fine and there is nothing which concerns me about the installation so I walk. Obviously after telling them I'd be getting hold of a replacement RCD main switch for them in the morning.

Over to you lads n lasses, fill yer boots.

Shouldn't this be a job for a qualified electrician?? :dunce2:

Did you manage to get a new RCD trev?
Not a GET mate, they discontinued those RCDs about 7 years ago. I'm talking to them about an RCBO CU just now, I've given them a few options, one of which is kind of a like for like. Wylex 80 amp jobs will fit in the CU but we all know about the manufacturers compatibility issues

So was there supplementary bonding or not?
Yes under certain conditions in the past you could have a TNC-S without an RCD, but you needed the supplementary bonding where appropriate to satisfy EEBADS.
So to do things 'by the book' (ie in accordance with the latest standard) you'd have needed to put an RCD back, especially with children and a pregnant woman in the house.

That said in the real world it's about making informed and educated decisions based on the individual circumstances - weighing up the pros and cons of leaving a technically non-compliant installation over leaving a family with no electricity.

Adam, I might be a lot of things but stupid is definitely not one of them. Yes there was SB. There still is.
However, as you say. In the real world temporary measures (aka bodges) sometimes have to be done for the short term. If I hadn't got the heating back on then someone else would have. Whether that person would have either considered the realities of what he was doing or went back today to have a proper talk to the couple and to give decent advice is neither here nor there.
The bottom line is that they now have a temp RCD in place so the installation is now no less safe than it was before it suddenly went dark and cold and they have the information they need to make an informed decision. A fairly costly informed decision but an informed one all the same.

The RCD wasn't tripping before you got there, indicating ( not proving) a reasonably safe installation. The switch change is temporary. High chance, almost definite, of young'un's health deteriorating, or minimal chance of exposed metalwork becoming live, then being touched etc.

I didn't say you were, but you didn't say if there was SB present.
I know you know what you're doing, but I also know there are other people reading this who don't know what they're doing and view this forum as a definitive instruction manual for electrical installation, and may take this to be a green light to take out the method of protection against electric shock (the rcd) while having never even heard of supplementary bonding, let alone considered it.
