As a favour to my local village school i have been doing the pat testing.
The council phoned the head and said she needs to do a risk assessment for the frequency of testing fare enough.

I said i would help her do this but the council have come back saying that i cant and i cant do the testing as all through i am a fully qualified and indentured electrician with 20 years i am not qualified pat tester but would be happy for me to quote for doing a fixed wiring inspection .

Wow so many replies so quickly have you not got any work.

I think it comes down to a person who has found themselves in a H&S role with no background in the subject.

He was happy for me to quote for testing the whole building but not the PAT side i recon he saw a advert for a pat testing course and as i dont have it i and not qualified in his eyes.

Replay the bit the IQ Electrical has posted regarding the requirements for compentency.

Yes, but I'm sure this is what the school are asking for a registered spark. Whether or not its domestic.

I thought what was asked for was qualified in PAT testing, not registered spark (which I'm assuming he is).

You need the C and G 2377 certificate one of the easiest exams ive ever taken 2 1 hour exams took me 15 mins each its the type of exam that you could pass if you didnt turn up its the : certificate for the inspection and testing of electrical equipment CG 2377/02 )and the other one is Certificate of competent management of electrical equipment maintainance (CG2377/01)

Just a thought I am deemed to be competent to pat test in the eyes of The niceic and have it on my enrolment but never do it never taken an exam and never paid extra to them guy just said can you pat test said yes he said how often a said rarely and that was it :dizzy2:

So no extra charge then, maybe I'm being a little synical then :p

Realy its a jobs worth at the council saying it just like the one's saying you have to lock up washing up liquid just in case a tramp breaks in and drinks it (did happen once some where in the uk ) were cutting back in the uk so there where to start sack the idiot that'll save us £35k

I have nothing against anyone expanding one's knowledge in their chosen fields thus increasing there overall competency. What i do find unacceptable these days are the magnitude of meaningless courses, that come with certificates saying you passed a 1 day, 1 week, 2 week course in this or that, or that you just attended a course....

The C&G certs were once, real and meaningful educational achievements, which are now being belittled by these scam type short and ultra short courses. They should be totally ashamed of themselves, far from promoting excellence in a chosen profession, they are now undermining there institute, all in the name of chasing the so called ''Buck''

Nothing against these short course's, but they should not warrant a certificate of any kind, They should be seen for what they are, ...short courses to help those interested understand a particular sub-aspect of our industry, for the applicant's own needs.
Not for the likes of LABC, and Scam Providers and the like, to take them out of context and use them a proficiency level, to undertake certain types of work.

Seems that anyone can now dream up a Scam certificated course, and charge a hefty fee for the privilege. Then along comes some organisation(s), that is then under the assumption it actually means something and starts insisting on professional tradesmen holding such certificates.

In this instance, why would any electrician holding 2391 inspection testing qualifications for arguments sake, ''Need'' to take a PAT course?? .....or any ''Qualified'' electrician come to that!!!!!

Couldnt agree more engineer 54 i did mine because we had to have it to work at the BBC , realistically they should realy remove your brain (no offence to the highly respected ~PAT guys there ) because after testing 5000 items your brains fried and all you do is dribble and dream of the pat tester , and why do you say your brain dead well even after 4999 items i bet you any money you wont know what the date is
