Discuss Existing Tails in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Can't be arsed doing the maths...
Me, 3 bed house, wife & 3 daughters, use about £12 elec/week @ 13p/kWh.
What current does that average out at over say, 12 hours a day, so 84 hours?

The problem is that the kitchen people have stated the the CU needs changing. The electrician has stated that the cables need to be 25mm. Looks like they both might have been wrong.... We will see....

If your spending money on a new kitchen, then i agree that it makes perfect sense to upgrade the old 3036 fuse board, rather that installing a mini CU next to the existing board just for the kitchen. At least you are then giving additional protection to the whole house rather than just to the revamped kitchen area!!

Very true Eng54, but the OP has only stated "no load change to what load i i have now" (post 5). They havent stated if the cooker circuit is new or they are using the existing circuit. That is why I was curious as to what was the reason the kitchen fitters said the CU needed changing. Need more info from the OP.

Thanks all your replys guys i am still confused though.... my fuse box is old wire fuses.
At first i am told new Cu
then i am told must have more expensive rcbo's to comply fully with regs
then i am told existing wire to meter is not 25mm but ony 16mm and needs replacing
and tails out are not 25mm but only 16mm and need replacing to comply fully with regulations.

So my question is this..... can a qualified electrician with part p change only the CU and get a certificte

thanks again guys

they said they said they cannot install any appliances unless it complies with regs cooker is single oven 240 volt 13 amp thingy...

What you should do is call a couple of local sparks and get them to quote to upgrade/replace the fuseboard. Then come back and tell us what they say.

They need to be members of schemes to ensure LABC notification.

What you need is a quality sparky to have a look.
I think yer man telectrix is probably the nearest.

I doubt it will cost much anyhow, look we all know it isn't a requirement, but FFS, the guy is having a new DB, a brand new kitchen which costs thousands and he's flucking worried about a couple of 25mm2 tails, unreal, get on with it man, get 2 or 3 quotes for a db change, don't even mention the tails, any spark with a brain and any intelligence will do whats required without itemising this item, and why are you worried about it, it's an easy Job, if it is that hard to install 25mm2 tails then chop the pipe out haha, the spark doing the DB has to certify it and if you don't let him change the tails (even though they may not need to be done) he may refuse to change the DB and the kitchen won't get fitted.

I really would get yourself a few quotes (telectrix well recommended on here) I dont think they are trying to rip you off but rather they are wrong about this.

every sparks opinion differs, heres one for you, I went to a house today with no equipotential bonding at all anywhere in the house and was pricing to install, cut a long story short the guy who owned the house said a spark who came around said he wouldn't do any work in the house unless a mains smoke detector was fitted at the top of the stairs as it was illegal not to have one, gasp lol, needless to say the EICR he did on the property got my full attention, he never mentioned lack of RCDs or the fact the TNS system ZE reading was over 1 ohm, that wasn't a concern, or the bonding, just the lack of a smoke detector.

I have to admit I always try to sell mains smoke to customer but if not interested I put up a battery, so If I make a mistake (never happened of course) or materials let me down (recalls) I only burn the house down and dont kill them as well
