Discuss Existing Tails in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I have been told by electrician incoming supply needs changing to 25mm tails need changing to 25mm new cu with rcbo's is needed acording to reulations.
i was originally told it was only a CU changed..........still confused?

Tails change not essential, but some say its mandatory.

RCBO's will be more expensive and again not mandatory. A dual RCD board WILL be cheaper.

question? if you decide to keep the 16mm2 tails how are you going to isolate them so the DB is dead for replacement?

Not his problem. Its the sparkies issue.

I dont know i am not an electrician...sorry

the point is someone is going to have to isolate the existing supply to change the board? if so they will have to either contact the DNO or illegally pull the fuse, if they pull the fuse then why would the DNO need to be called to upgrade the tails? the spark pulling the fuse could upgrade, ask him how he intended to replace the board in the first place and if he was going to pull the fuse then he can change the tails with no extra major costs to you.

I know mate, I was trying to see what the spark who quoted for the DB change was ging to do, seems strange he made a song and dance about upgrading tails when he was probably going to pull the fuse anyhow haha

ask the spark who insisted on upgrading the tails what regulation says he has to.

totally agree. i've had 16mm running at 110A and measured the temp. after 30mins. guess what 40deg.C. only slightly warm.

Tel just picking up on this temperature measurement, what did you use to measure the cable with, was it a clamp type, touch probe, or a infra red type they use on the solar panels. Also very interesting that it was such a low temperature too, that surprised me also.

Cheers.

used one of them little infra red ones. 30 odd quid from cpc farnell. the cable in question was a 16mm T/E feeding a sub in a pub kitchen. the 110A had welded the 63A MCB closed. measured the current, fluctuating between 90A and 115A, then did the temp. check. luckily there was another sub in the kitchen which was under loaded, so i shifted a 40A load to the other sub, then replaced the MCB. next to go was the suppliers 160A incomer fuse, ended up with a new 200A supply being installed.

I have a infra red thermometer i use on solar panels. But to be honest i would not have thought to do a temperature check not even out of curiosity. Sods law you change the loading and they come along and up it.

Thanks Tel, another school day for me.

Tails are a bit of a problem ... But time was the real issue as if I need supply upgrading to 25mm how long do I have to wait for DNO to do that.....

Thanks for all you input guys ...I have decided .........its a jungle out there! Lol

You might have to wait a few weeks for that if its not an emergency, also you'll have to get in touch with your electicity supplier for them to arrange it.

Be prepared to be passed from one department to another!

You are assuming that they will upgrade your supply in the first place

Maybe they will,maybe they won't

Yes had this a couple of years ago where DNO had come out installed double pole switch and put in new 16mm tails.

ic3y seems to, not surprisingly, be getting confused.

The 'tails' are just the two cables between the meter and the consumer unit.

Unless they are damaged or you are increasing the rating of the supplier's fuse replacing them is neither required nor necessary.
However, they are only a few pounds.

Whatever is decided the DNO are not involved and won't do anything.
