Discuss Existing Tails in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

So is it illegal for electricians to pull fuse. At meter to isolate.... Should there be isolation after meter and who fits that?

It would appear to depend on where you live.

Anyone can fit the isolator when the power is disconnected.
Some do not consider it necessary because it is so rarely needed.

Electricians are not authorised to pull the suppliers fuse as this would also mean cutting the small wire seal to the fuse holder which will be sealed by the DNO.

However, if your sparky did a risk assessment and thought there was no problem in cutting the seal and removing the fuse so he could work safey then i dont think anyone would get into trouble. This happens most of the time as its a pain getting the supplier out to isolate the supply for you.

However, if something were to happen ie the fuse holder fell apart then the sparky would be in deep carp explaining to them why he was messing around with their equipment.

If all goes well ie fairly modern cutout, the seals to the electricity meter havent been cut then I dont think anyone is going to say anything and in a court of law the only damage to the metering equipment will be a single cut seal to the fuse holder.

Hi,
Just to clarify points here.
The Supply Authority tails are 16mm. The tails from the meter to the CCU are 10mm.
The CCU is approx 3-4m from the meter.
I am fully aware there is not any extra load on the installation.
My colleagues are all stating that I must upgrade to current standards. 25mm tails/16mm earth.
I have absolutely no intention of pulling the main fuse.
This job if for a member of family & will be FOC.
I have the qualifications, just don't have 20 years experience unlike you guys.
Cheers,
Ray

My questions are in no doubt too undermind anybodys answers, just to further my knowledge!

I have noted that there is still no answer too a previous question ' how long are the tails' ? Is it not a regulation that a supply cable longer than 3m needs a point of isolation?? Or is this just good practise?

Neither has anybody considered the volt drop on final circuits, with possibly undersized cables! Should this not be taken in too consideration when either installing new circuits or adapting existing ones?

Again, how can a infinitive answer be given on wether they should be changed or not if the cut-out fuse has not been determined?

Hope you guys can help,
many thanks.

Hi,
The tails from the meter to the CCU are approx 3-4m long. They are routed in a tube that goes down the outside wall under the floor & up a wall into the CCU, so I can't be anymore precise than that! I don't know the rating of the fuse as I'm not prepared to withdraw that. With a combination of 16mm/10mm tails I hope it is no larger than 60amp.
Cheers,
Ray

If the tails to your distribution Board (fuse box to you) are only 10mm2 then I would strongly suggest you get them upgraded, if they were 16mm2 then provided no extra load was added to the existing electrical installation, (your house electrics to you) then no need to change, you seem to understand the sizes so you should understand the need to upgrade or not, what are they? 16 or 10?

Thankyou for the reply.
The tails from the cut out fuse to the meter are 16mm. From the Meter to the CCU they are 10mm.
Cheers,
Ray

then those 10mm tails should be upgraded to 16mm if any work is done to substantially increase the demand .
