am i being an idiot?

no you not mate , i had one the same last week , did a PIR all open but looked like a ring , the way i found it was to remove the tails from the board (of that circuit that is not the main tails lol)Do an R1+R2 test join the L an cpc together of one leg then test at every socket you should get a reading go till you dont get a reading then do the same with the other leg till you get no reading and then investigate that area , i found the one i had it was a cable cut in half half way up a wall , i was lucky it was a bungalow and i had access to the loft and cables , good luck on finding it let us know how you get on

defo a ring, it is existing yes, as i said i dropped all socket fronts and two wires in every one. never had this before. what i did was take one leg out board and tested every socket, found that two in the property were dead then got a bit baffeled! anyone want to step me through it, sorry guys
!

When you say two wires do you mean two cables, would you not have two cables in a radial?

it's something only the man on site can determine. still think disconnecting each leg in turn is quickest way to locate break or determine if it is 2 radials in one MCB.

right its sorted!! should have been on here earlier to tell everyone sorry!!

it was or should i say, should have been a ring!

one leg i was belling out, i did not get any continuity between live, earth or neutral earth,

went into the loft, all in pvc tube, easiest thing for me to do was put it on x2 16a breakers, and two perfectly safe happy radials!

cut out the dud leg, i also dropped every socket in the house, on that circuit, belled out between live and earth, to find 1st and second leg, then follow the ring around the house till i found my problematic leg!!
