Hi everyone My first and possibly my last post if not allowed, I am not an electrician but am having trouble finding one that can do the work I require. I thought ask on here and see what anwers I get.

The problem : ( we have been in this house two years , it already had an extension on it. I have not done any recent DIY work so have not hammered a nail into a wire etc.. )

My breaker keeps tripping, this is on a lighting circuit the breaker is a 10 amp ,The circuit seems to have been extended to include the lights in the extension taken off the upstairs lighting supply ?

All lights upstairs go (including the loft light ) apart from a light at the top of the stairs, this I can only assume does not go as it has switches at the top and bottom of the stairs and must be connected to the downstairs circuit.

we also get one light in the main house trip ( back of the house next to the annex) and all the lights in the annex ( mother in law terriority).

I have now had two electricians turn up, both have said the circuit is not overlloaded; 1 didnt have any tools insisted it must be the outside lights checked these and didnt find a problem so left saying he didnt know what it was. But said I should try and narrow it down e.g re set breaker and switch on lights one by one etc.. I have done this and think I have narrowed it down to the annex part of the house.

The 2nd electrician has been here 6 hours today at ÂŁ32 per hour didnt find it either, 1st took all bulbs out and checked the circuit everything fine.
The went around dropped the ceiling roses checked wires etc everything fine .
Checked the lights in the bathroom (annex) and said they were fine.

Finally after 4 hours found a wire in the loft saying it was that but didnt know where it went ?
Suggested I take up all the floor boards in my daughters bedroom and look for a junction box and it will be there. also said he would recommend rewiring everything. When we moved in we had letters etc saying all electrics updated and new extension wired this included a new fuse box this was done by previous owners in 2001.

The 2nd electrician replaced the breaker with a 6amp one saying the old one was faulty but this still trips. At present it will not reset.

Has anyone any ideas on the problem of where I can find a qualified electrician capable of doing the job. I live in Bromley in Kent.
Hope this post is acceptable and you can help.

If you need more info or I have not explained things correctly please reply and I will give as much info as I can.

Looking at some of the pics, crushed cables will cause problems with RCD's.

Although they dont look like they are on the outer sheath, when you open them up its plain to see.

This things usually dont rear their ugly heads until there is current flow.

I think I am just about done, so it's back on the phone to try and find an electrician in my area. I will try the links sent earlier in the post.

I will let everyone know once sorted out.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Hi,
just had a quick read of your post so correct me if I'm wrong. The fault is on the upstairs lighting. Is it all wired in a Jb or is it loop in loop out either way find which is the first point where the power comes in to the loft disconnect from here one side live rest of the circuit is dead see if it trips if it does not add next light on keep on add more lights back on to the circuit till you find it starts tripping again.
breaking the circuit down will get you near the fault.

With respect, the OP in this is not an electrician. And talented as he may be, I'd be reluctant to advise him to do anything that might lead to that all too familiar tingling rising up his arm.

LOL yes i dont want that tingling up my arm.

Thats the reaon i bought the ammeter with plastic ends so i didnt want to touch metal to metal.
When the first electrician came around and started changing the You should see the wires in my loft wires around on the circuit board without turning it off I thought he was mad.

you should see the wires in my loft it's like spegatti junction.
I have found wire connected to live with nothing on the ends, old bakerlight light switches left live.

I know when to stop I think I need someone who knows what he is doing,

But thanks for all the advice.

Best option there Cliff.

Looks to me like you may have a number of things that need sorting and its best left to a registered electrician to do that for you.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

finally an Update for everyone,

I have now had an NIC electrician in today, he found what the fault was in 5 mins connected a big tester to the fuse board. Said it was a live to earth short or may have been earth to live if that is different. Then took 2 hours to track it down, unfortunately it was under our flat roof. the last hour was putting everything back together.

Let me explain when we moved in the previous owners had had the flat roof over our kids rooms made into an apex one. The flat roof remained but was now in the loft as part of the floor. This electrician has traced teh fault to 17 metres in from where he is unable to reach it. He suggested cutting holes in the flat roof but said the wiring is in such a state in the loft it really needs re wiring.

To help me he has re connected al lights apart from 3 where the fault is, all the lights in the annex he has rigged up a temp solution by connecting to a 3amp plug socket.

I have been charged ÂŁ177.50 for today 3 hours work ( 2 people ) but if I take up the quote he will knock this off the price.

The price to re wire the upstairs lighting 7 lights + a fan in the bathroom. ÂŁ920

make the annex on a seperate circuit and re terminate all lights in the annex + fit fan isolator in that bathroom. ÂŁ280
add 2 rcbo's to board ÂŁ60

He has said I need to upgrade the main bonding to gas and water fuse board ÂŁ120

Test and provide certificates ÂŁ60

Total ÂŁ1440 + vat of ÂŁ216

ÂŁ1652 in all

Any advice is this about right are the things listed correct , i know it;s difficult to say without seeing the
house but any advice would be appreciated. I understand charges are different around the country.

With all the unconnected wires I found in the loft that were live and the peace of mind this will give us I
may have to do it.
