chris-

hi people,
How/ why am i supposed to bond the main water when it comes into the house in plastic. i thought it would be a deviation but ive now been told by a guy who said that the niceic said to bond the plastic pipe as the power supliers recomend it.

How can an electrician post such post as the OP?

How can he be an electrician and not know that plastic pipe does not conduct?

The OP has no business of doing such critical work, when he has no understanding of what he is supposed to accomplish?

He is non-electrician and an imposter.
All i am saying is that he may have worded it wrong and meant that it was plastic pipe incomer with copper after the stop tap and should he bond that.
I know it didn't read like that but i know i have posted things that when i have read them back make me squirm because you are just posting sometimes without checking what you have actually said.

hear hear

If the question was put as you say TC,

It would have made a lot of sense.

I would bond after the stop-cock to the copper.

To be fair I've actually started a very similar thread myself, where there was plastic incomer, quite bit of copper pipe on show round the tank then all plastic pipe under the floors. Just wanted to be 100% I could leave it out cos the neccessity of bonding is beaten into us so severly at sparky school.

For the record I wasn't asking if I bond the plastic, i was asking if I bond the copper pipework round the tank.

He doesn't claim to be a full spark. He could be doing onsite work in his first year as an apprentice (admittedly it would have to be near the end of his first year).

Usually I side with these sort of posts, but unfortunately not this time.

2 threads started by the OP where he is

1. Asking for advice on a wage where he will be in charge of several sites signing off work.
2 criticising other peoples inspection and testing work.

I blame the OSG.

What need is there for a section (4.5) headed 'Main protective bonding of plastic services' and (4.8) headed 'Supplementary bonding of plastic pipe installations'?
It then goes on to state that 'it is not required' instead of 'of course it's not needed you silly person'.

Main protective bonding is required for extraneous conductive parts - end of.

There isn't a section for 'Main protective bonding of wooden furniture' not being required.

Hi chris, YES!! you do have to bond it cause the guy who told you what the niceic guy said is what the guy said to the niceic guy who then told me and then he told me to tell you if you were to come and post that what you have posted but you might aswell just bond it IMO i think others will clarify what im saying cause a guy told us before who was told by an niceic guy.
hope this helps

Yes ..... but make sure that you use a plastic clamp.

I agree with des 56 as you have metal pipe work in the dwelling it has to be bonded back to the met or main earth in the ccu other wise under fault conditions that pipe going to go 230v and that stings . you have water pumps ,emersion heaters ect that can fail and will make that metal work live ,no bond no fault path idealy you need a reading of 0.05 ohms or below to achieve this on the metal work.i have been to a job where there was a reading on the radiatorof of 238v discoverd plumber had nicked the cable and it was touching the pipe work and it energised the pipe work ,

But this has nothing to do with bonding....this is earthing. There is no requirment to earth metal pipe.

If you head over to the Plumbers forum, you will notice a lot of people on there advising each other to bond straight on to the plastic pipe. One person even qualified it by explaining that it contains water, which is a conductor.

I hear you top cat but i think he got the general idea as i have read all the posts and not one was a direct attack at the poster but more of a re-assurance that what he thought was right and the so called guy at the NIC was talking poo.
I have been away from forum life for a bit now as i used than Napit one quite a bit but then lost interest.
I find these forums a great help and a good laugh too but only in a tongue in cheek way and im sure 99% of the people in here think the same so im sure he will be fine.
We have a very stressful trade so i think if you have no sense of humour as a sparky then there is something wrong

Quick question in regards to water coming into the property in plastic.

I had a property the other month where the water came in (as far as the stop cock - in a man cover in the middle of the road) in plastic and then from the other end of the stop cock came out in metal.

It ran for about 6 meters under the ground in metal to the house where it entered the house to the water meter and the whole house was fed in metal.

There was no bonding in place at all not even on gas so I bonded the gas and water as it was a gray area with about 6 meters of the supply side of the meter in metal and plastic.

What would anyone else do in this situation?
Normally any water coming in - in plastic to the meter I would not bond - no point
