chris-

hi people,
How/ why am i supposed to bond the main water when it comes into the house in plastic. i thought it would be a deviation but ive now been told by a guy who said that the niceic said to bond the plastic pipe as the power supliers recomend it.

again what Welsh Water are doing now around me - they are changing all water metal pipes to plastic upto to the stop cock and leaving the old copper pipes in place after the stop cock.

Again if I see a metal pipe coming into the property I always bond - never said I didn't.

Im am just wondering if you have a situation where the water is plastic upto the stop cock (welsh waters property) and the rest is metal (owners property) then personally I bond - what does everyone else do?

I agree with des 56 as you have metal pipe work in the dwelling it has to be bonded back to the met or main earth in the ccu other wise under fault conditions that pipe going to go 230v and that stings . you have water pumps ,emersion heaters ect that can fail and will make that metal work live ,no bond no fault path idealy you need a reading of 0.05 ohms or below to achieve this on the metal work.i have been to a job where there was a reading on the radiatorof of 238v discoverd plumber had nicked the cable and it was touching the pipe work and it energised the pipe work ,

But this has nothing to do with bonding....this is earthing. There is no requirment to earth metal pipe.

Absolutely correct from Wirepuller-why can't people understand the difference between earthing and bonding?
How can copper pipework starting and finishing within an installation meet the definition of an extraneous-conductive part and therefore require protective bonding?

thanks for sticking up for me but i do see the funny side of it. the guy who was told by niceic is my project manager and i told him pretty much the same thing as everyone else. my only thought was may be able to fit bonding clip to a metal presure reducing valve or restrainer.
I know we can all see the funny side of this post but that is another guy that will probably never post again. Out of 17 replies only 2 gave constructive advice!

i do understand, i just put it up there so when everyone writes how rediculous this is i then send it to my project manager who is the one saying it needs to be done. if you read the op you will see that i am of the opinion that this is bs. apologies accepted
How can an electrician post such post as the OP?

How can he be an electrician and not know that plastic pipe does not conduct?

The OP has no business of doing such critical work, when he has no understanding of what he is supposed to accomplish?

He is non-electrician and an imposter.

chris, good to see you can see the funny side.
I've seen plastic water in, brass stop cock, rest of house plastic.
One guess to as what was connected to the stop cock...

whats your point?1) i was curious of what people would ask for for that job.
2) people who did work before me had not tested it... makes me think it may have been your work as your getting on your high horse about what i wish to discuss.
Usually I side with these sort of posts, but unfortunately not this time.

2 threads started by the OP where he is

1. Asking for advice on a wage where he will be in charge of several sites signing off work.
2 criticising other peoples inspection and testing work.

I do NHBC work for a local contractor and always leave an unconnected bond at plastic incoming pipe in case we get an inspector who insists its bonded before he will sign off (happened twice) then disconnect it afterwards. Idiots.

You are joking??? aren't you

A building inspector demanding that plastic pipe be bonded????

You can not be serious!!!!

About 10 years ago, I was having an extension built which required a "raft" due to us being near a stream. Anyway, there was a shed load of steel reinforcing in the concrete which had to be wire-wrapped together like a giant mechano set, along with a large diagram of how it all went. When the building inspector came out to check on the progress, he admitted that there is no way he would know whether it was correct or not, as nobody at the office had any experience of this kind of structure. Being an engineer, I was quite confident that it was correct :)

I think you are under the impression that those in charge know what they are doing.

Never assume this.
Plus previous post

And there in lies a problem.
If you let the ignorant get away with their nonsense, by your lethargy, the nonsense perpetuates.
Hope that's too pessimistic?! :-)

I hope you used it as an Uffer earth mat
