I've managed to get a 450mm SDS (10) masonry bit jammed solid, going up at an angle above a door frame. I think it has got stuck at some reinforcing in a lintel. I have about 50mm still showing, but can't get the bl**dy thing to move. It's in a domestic property and the lady of the house ain't best pleased.
Any suggestions as to how I might retrieve the offending item ( and yes, I feel like a right t*t!)??????

It's an SDS bit so a spanner can grip the end enough to twist it a bit. It worked for me in the past. Good luck by the way.

Spanner or if no spanner to hand try Mole Grips.

This is an absolute long-shot, but you could also use an extra-long narrow core bit (I've got a 32mm one I use for SWA's) and actually core around the bit in-situ although with 400mm jammed you won't get very far but might just rattle it loose regardless.

ignoring all of these stupid replys
don.t burn the drill out
get some stillsons and wind the shaft of the core drill out counter/anti clockwise

Perhaps could have been worded differently, but not a bad idea if you can get one in!

Guys, seriously thanks. HHL, I was thinking about using my Fein, but the blades just won't "cut it"!
Im going to try the vice grips and spanner ideas, after which, if it's still there, I'll hang a plant pot from it and just tell her she can't close her front door any more.
DOH!!!!

PS any recommendations for a new SDS?

Well at least you can joke about it Polo :smiley2:, although I know you'll be worried and I'm racking my brain!! Picture would be good Polo (and not just to have a giggle at).

I do think the Stilsons might be an idea though! I think you've just got to try and stay calm.... and slowly get it out with a bit of (lightish)banging here and there and bit of reverse drilling and a bit of the stilson.

Not sure about the new SDS, mine's a 2kg Makita that I've had for a long time & I'm not up to date with what's on the market now, but back to the jammed drill; if you can get a spanner / grips or whatever on to the drill just gently wind it back & forth while tapping the end with your hammer and you could be lucky.

Edit:

Rocks idea about using the core drill is a VERY good one - providing you have a core drill about 30mm or thereabouts. If you have just do it!

Stop flapping man, if all else fails just hang a coat on it!

Same thing happened to me on Friday, although I was in an outside heating duct. Put a piece of wood on the drill bit before you hit it with a hammer. Worked for me.
How about putting some washing up liquid on the drill bit / in the hole.
