I've managed to get a 450mm SDS (10) masonry bit jammed solid, going up at an angle above a door frame. I think it has got stuck at some reinforcing in a lintel. I have about 50mm still showing, but can't get the bl**dy thing to move. It's in a domestic property and the lady of the house ain't best pleased.
Any suggestions as to how I might retrieve the offending item ( and yes, I feel like a right t*t!)??????

I was drilling down through my foundations for a water pipe and got TWO 1m drill bits stuck down the hole under the cupboard, I was, eventually, after about a days drilling, able to get them out by drilling beside the bit with a smaller bit (that was how I got the second one stuck) and it is amazing how much clearance you need to get the bit out. Oh yes and spinning a masonry drill bit beside another bit, one tends to catch in the flutes, two tends to wear out the flutes.

I managed to get an armed chasing bit stuck tight down the back of some skirting last week tried everything to get it out! Hammer grips etc. ended up putting a 16mm bit down the side of it with the SDS to give it room to wiggle out.

I got one out on a similar situation by lifting a board in the house, so we could turn then hit the end of the bit while someone turned it the same way outside with grips, took a while , the actual problem was the drill had gone up the edge of lintel so it was effectively screwed in until the lad jammed it solid

Been there got the T-shirt and found the best course of action without destroying everything is some large pipe wrenches, a no'10 sds bit has a excellent shaped base to purchase on with a wrench now depending what has jammed it it will either work free or snap at its weakest point
P.S. hope your not drilling through a lintel especially a pre-stessed one... seen them explode before on a demolition site when the digger damaged it.

Off topic but related to Darkwoods post,
I used to build and install moulds for prestressed concrete T beams mostly these moulds were 75m long and upto 5m wide each wire had 1 1/2 tonnes of pressure placed on them via hydraulic ram each beam usually had 5 wires , the wires passed through a 3" steel plate at each end and were held by a small locking device gripping the wire,
when these failed the result was the captive wire lock would have roughly the same energy as a rifle round and the wall behind had perfect holes straight through engineering brick and into sandbags!

I find using grips the best method, just get them on the end and rock them back and forth both ways unitil it loosens, best to learn how to use a drill though, always pull the drill out of the hole every so often to remove dust to avoid jamming lol.

Say that you need to get something from the van and drive off !!

I almost had this issue a week or so ago going through an outer wall down into the porch when the cu was, lifted a flood board and pointed the drill at quite a steep angle downwards, it was a 600mm 10mm bit, sds, it was squealing like it had touched the edge of metal.

I managed to just get enough back up to connect to the drill, to get it out.
